Ongoing problems with SP1

Since installing SP1 on my desktop, I have experienced a very frustrating
problem coming up over and over again. I try to set up or attach a USB
device, and instead of connecting, I get a message that the driver can't be
found and asking me to insert the disk. When I click that I don't have the
disk, I invariably get a option to search for the driver, but it is never
found. This has happened with two different flash drives, and just now I
tried to set up a Pocket PC mobile device and got the same response. I have
been using my laptop without SP1, and do not get these problems. It seems
that the best thing might be to just get rid of SP1, but when I went to the
installed updates window to try to uninstall it, I was not given that option.
Any help to either get SP1 to start operating properly or to get rid of it
will be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Do you have a restore point set for before the SP1 update?

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Not sure if I do but probably, however since the install I believed I have
installed other programs, and I don't want to have other things stop working.
How can I find the restore points I do have.

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your suggestion. I just emailed support from that page, and will
hopefully get a helpful reply. It's nice to know that Microsoft is offering
support, which I thought they had stopped doing.

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Good luck with it. MS offers free support for a number of things, including
installation problems with retail copies of Windows and for Windows Update
problems for all users.

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Type 'system restore' in Start/Search + Enter. Click Next. On the list
page put a check in the box that says "Show retore points older than 5 days"
below the window.

Re: Ongoing problems with SP1

Point the driver search to \Windows\System32. If the device is then found
post back for information on a permanent fix.

RE: Ongoing problems with SP1

I had different problems with SP1; background and icon distortion and sound
deletion; I immediately had the system restore itself to the point before SP1
installation and things went back to normal (I hope).

RE: Ongoing problems with SP1

I would start by going into the device manager and deleting the USB
installations. After you delete them, right click on any device in device
manager and select "scan for hardware changes". This will reinstall the
device. I have noticed this problem is more prevalant with cruzer mini
drives than any other. If this does not work, I would try to find a new
installation disk that has sp1 included.

If you want to try to uninstall SP1, go to the following KB:
