Vista - "Setup cannot determine if this computer supprts installation."

Greeatings,

I downloaded RC1, got an email (finally) with my key, and when I try to run
the setup I get the following error:

"Setup cannot determine if this computer support this version of Windows."

And then exits.

Anyone know what causes this and if there's a way around it?

Are you by any chance dual booting and this happens during setup of Vista
within XP? Reason I ask is that since 5472 I have not been able to setup in
XP but I have no trouble running it if I restart.

The caveat always holds that if you're using SATA you need to install
drivers for it during setup.

Yes, I am running the setup from XP Home (SP2, all updates, IE7 RC1, etc).
I'm also running the installation from the local disk since I don't have a
DVD burner. This shouldn't be a problem though since all version of Windows
from 95 and up have been able to do this. Either way, this is one of those
bugs that's pretty painful to experience. I'm really looking forward to
testing this build and I've been a strong supporter of Vista even through the
strong criticism (most of when I disagree wholeheartedly with).

Jonathon, I also had this problem trying to install RC1. I also do not have a
dvd burner, so I mounted the ISO file for RC1 in a virtual drive using Dameon
tools. I got the same error msg, then setup would not continue. I went into
the XP services applet(Control panel, Administrative tools, services) and
made sure that all the services were running that I could get to run. I am a
gamer, so I had alot of the windows services shut down..I have XP tweaked
like crazy. Anyhow, after I did that I launched the RC1 setup again and I was
able to install with no problems. I am writing this msg now from Vista! I had
a problem with my Nforce-4 RAID zero array, but have that fixed also, but
thats another thread in this forum. Anyway, check your services and try to
get most or all of them running, I am not sure exactly whitch one made RC1
setup work, but hopefully this will work for you. Let us know.

Yay!

I set everything to automatic and rebooted. The installation is in progress
now.

Microsoft might want to look into putting this in the release notes if it's
going to be an issue in the release builds as well.

Jon as long as you continue to reloop your question it's hard for anyone to
help you. You didn't answer what I asked but merely pasted my questions to
YOU. We know you're not getting through setup the first time you tell us.
My question was where are you running it from. You failed to provide that
info.

Next time try detailing with a little more info.

1) I am happy you have been a strong supporter of Vista even through all the
criticism. I think it merits much criticism frankly, and I'm not alone in
this. I've provided the links of many others including major authors of the
Vista books who are providing criticism.

2) I know you say that running from XP shouldn't be a problem but it has
been for a large number of people after 5472. So I would try running setup
from a restart. That has been successful for many people and has avoided
what are false errors such as "your IDE controller won't support Vista when
it will, and a number of others. It takes seconds and is worth doing.

3) If you don't have a burner, there are many many good free Iso burners on
this group. You only need to View>find and search for them.

4) You could use Daemon tools or Virtual Server RC1 if you liked.

5) I understand how much you want to try Vista, and I'm trying to get you
there.

The above message with just your questions quoted was me being a little
shallowheaded with this forum system. I apologize for any misunderstandings
it may have caused.

As for the burner issue, it's not that I don't have burner software, because
I do. I use Cyberlink Power2Go, it's just that I only have a CD-RW driver,
not a physical DVD burner.

In either case, I've gotten RC1 installed with the suggestions given by the
other poster; enabling all of the Windows XP services before attempting. I'm
now running into aother problem with Vista now being able to make a
connection with my ISP's DNS server, even when XP will connect just fine.

my xp home did the same thing on my hp pavilion when i tried
to install vista from inside xp, i had to boot from the dvd and do a
clean install.
my xp pro on my other machine did a upgrade install fine.
i think the issue is that xp home can't upgrade to ultimate so
the install aborts. where xp pro can be upgraded to vista ultimate edition
so the install and or upgrade works fine from inside xp pro sp2.
