obsolete USB Scanners and Vista

For those of you who have USB scanners that Vista has reported to be
incompatible, do the following.
1- Make sure you have your scanner installation CD
2- Unplug the USB lead from the scanner to the computer.
3- Restart Vista
4- Plug in the USB cable for the scanner to your computer.
5- Vista will state "new hardware found, searching for drivers" let this
finish, you will then be prompted for your driver software disc
6- Insert CD and click on next, Vista will install your scanner and it will
work fine in the Vista Camera and scanner wizard.
7- Please note, if your scanner came with software such as "panel" etc, this
will not work. However, at least you can use your so called obsolete
scanner.

That depends on how old the "obsolete" hardware is.

Though I have gotten XP drivers to work with Vista...
and I would *guess* Win2k drivers may work too...
I seriously doubt if any drivers from Win9x would work and I would
definitely not even try.

Always best to first check the website of the manufacturer to see if Vista
drivers are avail.

Re: obsolete USB Scanners and Vista

You could also try using Vuescan software.
This provides a driver as well as software and it works on my HP5370c and
many others.
Hewlett Packard does`nt provide a Vista driver so Vuescan was my only choice
other than buy a new scanner.

Yes, I see your point, I do apologise, I meant scanners that DID work on
XP., but upgrade advisor stated they would not work under vista.
This only refers to the standard flatbed scanners, not the all in one type
like epson scanner/printer etc.

Ok...

Yes, I think the chance of an "XP" scanner working with Vista would be
pretty good.
Using the original software should not be too terribly important

I agree with what you say about the cost, but that dependends on what the
software is like that comes with your scanner.
Why not give the free trial a go and see if you like it. You might decide
its worth the extra expense.
