Vista - Installed new Video Card somehow screwed up my bootloader

Hey guys,

Recently (couple days ago) i installed a new video card (geforce 260), after the hardware change I couldnt boot into Vista.

Vista Home Premium 64 wont boot after new video card

A member in this forum, Barman58, started to assist me with my problem.

I have downloaded Vista Boot Pro 3.3, EasyBCD and tried to use the start up repair from my Vista DVD and still I am getting boot problems.

Im currently running Vista Home Premium 64

Ive used EasyBCD and have tried all three scenarios that are on their website. The last scenario I cannot get to work however. THe program says that Vista already has a boot files so EasyBCD will not create one. I was a little confused with the "boot drive" and the "vista drive" (wouldnt they be the same)?


Also when using the Vista CD; when i try to use the "start up repair" tool, it begins to work but then asks if ive added any removable hardware recently, like a camera. If so, remove it and restart. I do NOT have anything connected like that, though I DO have a flash drive that I was using for Readyboost.....

Sorry if this post goes in many directions, Ive just tried all the options I can find on forums, net, etc.

What I would like to do is be able to restore the bootloader from the Vista DVD, as it would be the truest form of "fresh install".

Ive tried using the CMD prompt on the DVD but I still get errors with that; for example the command line

C:\boot\bootsect.exe/nt60 all /force always kicks back and says "path not found"

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As of right now I can get into vista by using the DVD I just place it in the tray and when my HDD fails to boot, it asks for the DVD, I hit enter and wait until my system boots. Its very annoying.

Have you removed the flash drive?
Can you F8 boot into safe mode?

OK just a little update,

I removed the flashdrive and hit F8 to try safe mode, It prompted me to select a drive to boot from, I selected the proper drive and it booted with no problems.

What does this mean since ive never tried a safe mode before?

Another update,

Ok i fixed the problem. After Vista booted in safe mode I had a feeling that the bootloader was OK. So I went into bios and found out that my boot priority WITHIN my two HDD's was backwards....so Bios would boot from my HDD's but the WRONG one. I corrected that and now a normal boot worked perfect.

Dont know how this was switched when i swapped my vid card, little odd. Anyways I think everything will be working for now on.
