| | Triple boot vista, xp, and ubuntu I have a computer running XP Professional and Ubuntu 6.06LTS (dual-boot) with a 250GB HD. When my computer starts up GRUB is automatically loaded and asks me which to boot Ubnuntu Linux or Microsoft Windows XP Professional. My Linux partitions are as follows: /dev/sda5 - Linux ext3 partion (ubuntu installation is here) - 35GB /dev/sda6 - linux-swap partition - 5GB Of course, these partitions are only visible to Linux and not Windows. My Windows Partitions are as follows: C:/ - NTFS (windows xp is here) -100GB E:/ - NTFS (plan to put vista here) - 90GB F:/ - FAT32 - 10GB I plan to put Vista RC1 on E:/. I have Vista downloaded and putn onto DVD. My question(s) are: 1) Can I just install Vista on E:/ and will it appear in GRUB or will I have to do some configuration? 2) GRUB is put in the MBR. Will installing Vista destroy GRUB thus not allowing me to boot one or more OSes? Can someone provide me with detailed instructions to install Vista RC1 as a triple-boot option without doing anything to Linux or Windows Xp Pro? And also, If I get vista on how do I uninstall it from the system after vista reaches the beta-test expiry date (june 2007)? Help is appreciated |

| | RE: Triple boot vista, xp, and ubuntu I believe he's correct. I did the triple boot installing in this order: XP, Vista, Mandriva and they all work great. I do believe Vista would overwrite the linux boot. When I boot to Vista, the linux partition doesn't show within the os. | | RE: Triple boot vista, xp, and ubuntu just to add my two cents. i am running the same set up you are asking about. i have tried what you are asking, which is installing Vista (or any MS for that matter) AFTER a Linux install. in general that is a bad idea just as you have already read. Linux should always be installed last when doing a multi boot set up from same HDD. im assuming you do not have a separate HDD; as that would be the easiest. just unplug the drive with Ubuntu and XP and install directly to other drive. in theory it may be possible to re-install grub by booting with the Ubuntu CD (has to be the alternate NOT the LIVE) and then repair. i was able to do this but did not have a good system after that and had to re-install anyway. if you are really good with Linux you may be able to make it happen otherwise, either get a new drive or re-install Ubuntu after Vista. |
