in place repair/install

Have a Home Premium system which has developed bad sectors and will not boot presumably because boot files are damaged. Successfully ran CHKDSK from a BartPE CD and marked those sectors.

With XP I have run repair installs many times, but Vista does not seem to offer this. When I boot from the DVD, Upgrade option is disabled and I am advised to run Setup from Windows which is not possible.

Any ideas to preserve applications and settings?

Thanks

Hello Alwayswonder,

Since you are unable to do a repair (upgrade) install, I see no way to preserve the applications and their settings.

If you have files that you need to preserve, then you could boot from your Vista installation disk and use the "Advanced drive options" during installation to shrink your current drive down by 70 GB (71680 MB) to create another partiton to install a new Vista on instead. No not delete or install on the original partition though. This way when you finish installing Vista on the new partition, your old Vista installation will still be on the original partition. You should then be able to copy any files that you would like to keep from within the new Vista installation to a backup source. Afterwards, you can wipe out both partitions and reinstall Vista clean again, then add your files back from the backups.

I hope this helps some,
Shawn

Re: in place repair/install

If you select INSTALL a second time, it will discover the old version, and
offer a repair option, which will save your old files in a special
Windows.old folder (or some such name). All documents are there, and
programs still work from before.

More than likely the drive will continue to develop bad sectors...
So now would be the time to replace it
