| Guest | Windows Vista Recovery keeping registry files (Repair - Reinstall) How could I reinstall my Windows Vista (currenlty Home Premium version) keeping my software installed and running as is? In previously released versions of Windows , as Windows XP, user could choose to repair the current installation of windows through setup. Is there a way to do a repair install like this? Thanks, Constantine Nikolopoulos |

| Guest | Re: Windows Vista Recovery keeping registry files (Repair - Reinst Thanks for reply Malke. The site that you linked is helpful only if you can log into windows. I want to ask if there is a way to save my installation from a boot environment. Like windows xp repair install. Thanks in advance!! | Member | Re: Windows Vista Recovery keeping registry files (Repair - Reinstall) Well.. if you have the dvd , you should be able to do so yes... if not , there is a site.. something like neolite or something? which has recovery images you can download and burn to get a recovery environment. Your topic title though is misleading to your question. Regarding that.. I been pondering myself if I should make a recovery image from a base installation.. and in time if I run a new install... I coould (with programs on a different partition) , just patch it with a registry backup (which one has to schedule twice a day or so to be safe) and well... technically speaking...one could have some luck with it. |

Like windows xp repair install. that being able to do a repair install as in XP is A Good Thing but because of the way Vista (and Windows 7) are installed - laying down an image instead of copying individual files - a repair install is not possible. So if you can't boot into Windows, retrieve your data using a rescue system such as a Bart's PE or Linux Live CD (I prefer Knoppix) and clean-install Vista. Reinstall your programs from installation media and copy over your data from the backup you made. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
