can't reboot

Can someone please help me. I was trying to upgrade from XP to RC 1, and when
it boots up I get the command prompt. When I try to do earlier version of
windows, it says I am missing file <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

so does this mean that you CAN boot into VISTA? you are not going to be able
to boot to earlier version because there is no earlier version, it was
overwritten by Vista when you upgraded. you can remove that entry by going to
MSCONFIG type that in the run box inside vista. (start > run > type
"MSCONFIG")

RE: can't reboot

Have you tried booting from the DVD and doing the "upgrade" again?

RE: can't reboot

It goes to command prompt right after it starts.

RE: can't reboot

what does it say? you should have some options not just the C: prompt!

RE: can't reboot

OK lets just try to re-install. this time you should only have the option to
do a clean install, and that is what we want, so make sure you shose "CUSTOM"
when you get to the install screen. BTW, if you follow what i wrote you will
loose all the info from XP and it will be like a brand new install as if you
never had an OS before. Vista should still keep some files in a folder called
"windows.old" but aside from basic stuff dont expect too much. i would
suggest doing a google search for other options or go to www.neosmart.net and
ask for assistance.

***I WILL ASSUME THAT YOUR DISC IS NOT BURNED OR IF IT IS, YOU KNOW IT IS A
GOOD ISO IMAGE--BECAUSE YOU HAVE CHECKED IT****

turn on computer and first try this.
in the command prompt type cd C:\
then type "FIXMBR" w/o qoutes

if you did not get to C: then insert the Vista DVD and reboot.

if it did not begin to boot from the DVD then:
when the system begins look at the screen carefully and it should say "
Press F1 for set up" or "Press esc for start order" or something to that
effect it may be a bit different depending on the mfg. of your computer. you
want to select "boot from your CD/DVD player"

at this point you should recognize the screens from Vista and continue with
the installation, choose CUSTOM and follow the prompts.

--Good Luck
