| | XP MCE to Vista Upgrade Failure at Phase 2: Hello, I am trying to upgrade an XP MCE SP2 Notebook computer (HP Pavilion zv6100) to Vista. A clean install of Vista works perfectly, however, I am going crazy trying to get the upgrade to work. The notebook currently has no additional hardware. the specs are: ===================================================== Microprocessor 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon™64 Processor 3200+ with PowerNow!™ Technology Microprocessor Cache 512KB L2 Cache Memory 512MB 333MHz DDR System Memory (2 Dimm) Memory Max 2048MB Video Graphics ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200M IGP Video Memory 128MB DDR (dedicated) Hard Drive 100GB (4200RPM) Hard Drive ==================================================== The first phase of the install goes through okay. On the UI, it says expanding files (21%) and then reboots. After the reboot, the install UI comes up, the statys stays "expanding files (21%)" but the ellipses (dots) move (so it seems that the installer is trying to do something). After about 10 minutes, the installer throws a popup saying "Install is cancelled. The installer encountered an error and cannot continue". It does not provide any additional description. If I reboot at this stage, the machine reboots to a screen that says rolling back install, and then reboots again, at which point the machine becomes unusable (The boot loader screen still comes up, but both the Windows boot up option and the Previous version of Windows" option throw up errors (Windows error is about Winloader not found, the other one complains about ntldr not found). At this point I have to restore machine back to the pre-vista install state from backup (which I luckily made before installnig Vista). I have been trying to do the upgrade with exact same results for the past couple of weeks. I have looked at the Setupact.log files inthe Panther directory. This file has the following error towards the end: =================================================== 2006-12-18 00:28:34, Info [0x0800c9] MIG WinPEGather: Migrating from (X:\WINDOWS) to | | Re: XP MCE to Vista Upgrade Failure at Phase 2: Appears that the upgrade process cannot complete migration of installed application/data - controlsets, e.g.. (controlset001 - there are max of four in the registry - only two used) contain boot data, "last known good configuration) data and also utilized by System Restore. Unfortunately - no info regarding migration blockage. If you have installation disks for installed programs it may be useful to begin uninstalling.
