| | Re: remove XP Hi praveen :-) If you are only going to have the Vista installed, then boot into Vista, and if you haven't laready, download and install the VistaBoot Pro from here in Vista. http://www.pro-networks.org/vistabootpro/intro.php Once it is installed on Vista, open VistaBoot Pro and click on Manage drives and you should see both the XP and Vista listed. You can remove (delete) the XP from the list, or click on the Restore Vista bootloader. However, I would advise you to wait until you have removed the XP from the hard drive to do so, just in case. Once XP is fully removed, then deleted it from the list, and click on Restore Vista bootloader. You should then have only one listed, and you should boot straight into Vista, Howewer, if it does not work as you wish after XP is removed, then put the Vista install disk in the DVD ROM and let it boot up, then do a Repair of the Startup. That should get you back to the Vista bootup only. Hope this helps. | | Re: remove XP Hi, Praveen. No matter which volume you "install" Vista (or WinXP) on, it will ALWAYS put its boot-up files in the System Partition, which is the Active (bootable) primary partition on the HDD designated in the BIOS as the first boot device at the time Vista Setup is run. So, if your first HDD was the boot device when you installed Vista, that's where the boot-up files are, even if most of Vista is in G:\Windows. When you remove that first HDD, you also remove that System Partition - and the computer has no idea how to boot Vista - or anything else. There are several ways to get to where you want to be from where you are. Probably the simplest is to first use Disk Management (from either WinXP or Vista) to make sure that the primary partition on your second HDD is marked Active, then remove your first HDD. Then put the Vista DVD in and follow Jan's instructions to reinstall the Vista bootloader - which will now go to your second HDD, since it is the only one available at the time. (You may need to revisit Disk Management later to be sure that your drive letters haven't shifted.) Your C:\Boot.ini file knows nothing of Vista, which uses the BCD (Boot Configuration Data) files, instead. In a dual-boot setup, BCD can turn control over to Boot.ini to boot the "previous" versions of Windows, but Boot.ini has no such ability to switch to the BCD boot system. By the way, I know NOTHING of GRUB, or Linux, so I can't help at all with that part of your problem. RC -- R. C. | | Re: remove XP What is the first disk in the BIOS? Do you have PATA or SATA disks? As for the instructions, I can't add much to what R.C. has said. I do know that on my system, I had one PATA drive, and it was seen as the first drive in line, the 0 disk, no matter what I did to try to change it in the BIOS. I even took it out of the boot order, but, when I installed the Vista RTM, it would insist on installing the boot files on that drive instead of the correct drive. Thus, when I tried to boot into it, it did nothing but reboot the machine. So....you said that it solved half your problem. Which half? What part of what I posted did you actually do? And what is the problem you are having at this time? Is it only that the XP is still showing up in the boot menu? Have you tried to delete the XP from the boot.ini? Also, in VistaBoot Pro, did you go to the Bootloader section and select Reinstall the Vista Bootloader? That should restore the Vista bootloader. Did you try repairing the Vista Startup from the Vista DVD? If you no longer have the XP installed on your system, then it should repair the bootloader and you should boot into Vista. I have done this myself, and I know that it will work in most cases. If you still have the disk that XP was installed on connected, try disconnecting it and then run the Vista Startup repair and see if that will restore the normal Vista bootloader. We need more details of what you have done and what the results are. We can't see your machine as you can, so you must be our eyes and tell us what you see, what you are doing or have done, and what is happening, then we can have a better idea of how to help you. ok? :-) Jan ![]() MS MVP - Windows IE "praveen" <praveen@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:445B5934-08CA-434E-8F8E-C15C3376C24E@microsoft.com... > > Thanks a lot.............. > But this solved only my half problem......i want that HDD having vista > should be stand-alone(boot without older HDD) > Also another problem....the HDD having vista has a corrupted copy of > GRUB > boot-loader.
