Vista installation

Hi ya
I thinking of buying the Vista upgrade on CD. Can you install on more than
one computer from the same disk.

Thanks

Re: Vista installation

Warning: The upgrade edition does not work like the XP upgrade edition did.
You cannot install by booting with the disc. Seach here and in the
vista.general ng on "upgrade" to get the low down.

Re: Vista installation

Ouch so you can only install the upgrade and do the clean install from
within an already installed qualifying copy of windows? So that means i'll
have to install win2000 first and then run setup from with in it. This is
going to surprise a lot of people. So this means there is no cd/dvd check
for vista upgrade?

That's what it means.

Re: Vista installation

You can install from the cd by booting to it. No need for an earlier
Operating system. You can also upgrade from within XP SP2 by starting the
install from within XP. There is no such thing as an upgrade dvd for Vista.
All versions are on the same DVD. It is just the product key you enter that
makes it what you want. If you try to cheat and enter a different version
than the key you have without entering the key you will be very unhappy once
the first month passes.

If you install from booting to the DVD you will not be able to do an
upgrade, only a clean install.

You cannot upgrade from Windows 2000.

I highly reccommend that you run the Vista Upgrade Advisor before beginning
the installation to avoid unforeseen issues while installing due to hardware
issues or many other things that can stop the install.

I am with MS tech support on Vista.

Re: Vista installation

No. One copy of Vista on One machine. If you have more machines then you
either need to buy further copies of Vista or go for volume licencing.

Re: Vista installation

You cannot do a classic clean installation from the desktop. The Format
tool is in the Advanced Options and those are only enabled when you boot
from the dvd. What it comes down to is that you cannot plow under the OS
from which you launced Setup. If you are a fan of classic clean
installations then I suggest buying the full edition.

What this all means is that your legacy Windows cd is not relevant to
installing Vista at all. Yes, it will surprise a few, but only those
veterans who have been doing classic clean installations.

Something else to ponder is that there is no "clean install" option. There
are only "upgrade" and "custom." Custom does not format the target
partition unless it is a raw drive.

But will be very important if you have to reinstall as you will have to
reinstall XP first, unless you make an image of Vista after installing .

Re: Vista installation

Yeah, I don't go for that. I'm sticking with full editions myself. But
that's just me.
