| | Repair Vista? I know in XP when you boot up on the CD rom you have an option to repair. Is this an option in Vista as well? Something is buggered in my OS: my PS/2 mouse is unrecognizable (I've tried several mice) as well as my printer vanishing from the OS. I'm most concerned about the PS/2 port because I don't like using the USB port for a mouse. Can do a resote because this happened two days ago and my last restore point was one day ago. Can we repair Vista? Thanks! |

I only ask because it might be the ps2 port thats naffed up ands if it is the port then it wont work on XP either "wolfgrrl" <wolfgrrl@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6E8B1521-CE03-482B-A85A-C3762D0E60E1@microsoft.com... >I know in XP when you boot up on the CD rom you have an option to repair. >Is > this an option in Vista as well? | | Re: Repair Vista? I don't have a duak boot system now - strictly Vista. The port was working fine and then after a reboot where I plugged a USB cable into the back of the machine (nothing on the cable, just a cable) , the PS/2 mouse quit working. | | Re: Repair Vista? There is no 'repair' option on vista like on XP. With the higher end versions of Vista, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate you do have an option called Complete backup and restore which creates a shadow copy image of your system but you need to completely backup your pc first using complete backup and restore, because the repair option needs the imaged backup. -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows Shell/User Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". | | RE: Repair Vista? Is there any sort of driver you can update? It doesn't really sound like something that reinstalling / repairing vista would help. | | Re: Repair Vista? [note: part of this conversion accidently went to email, I've put those parts below so all can see] Running sfc /scannow isn't nearly as complete as running a repair install in XP was, and certainly didn't fix the problem I want a repair install for. It is worth trying though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: COLIN BARNHORST [mailto:colinbarharst@msn.com] Sent: Thursday, January 04, 2007 10:18 PM To: Dan Andersen Subject: Re: Repair Vista? Yes there is. He can run "sfc /scannow" from a command prompt just like XP. It needs to be an elevated command prompt. The WinRE tools include a command line as well as some other tools. From: Dan Andersen That is not what he is asking. That only offers to do system restore or complete pc restore from backup, or command prompt. It is nothing like the repair install in XP that puts but all files to a nice fresh state. | | Re: Repair Vista? Colin have you tried this? I will have to look at it, but i would assume that 'Repair your computer' option would take you to the system recovery tools and. other than the repair via 'complete pc backup and restore' i can#'t see any other way of doing a repair install. unless one can re-install over the existing copy without damaging any programs that are already installed (that's something i need to try) -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows Shell/User Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". | | Re: Repair Vista? As i thought, Colin, when you click on the "Repair Your Computer" link it simply takes you to the system recovery tools, the options of which are: a.. Startup repair - This automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting b.. System Restore - This will Restore Windows to an earlier point in time c.. Windows Complete PC Restore - This will completely restore your entire PC - programs, system settings and files - from a back up that you have previously created (Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate only) d.. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - This checks your computer's memory hardware for errors e.. Command Prompt - This opens a Command Window -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows Shell/User Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". | | Re: Repair Vista? You can just do an upgrade-in-place. If you have Vista Ultimate installed and launch Setup from the Vista desktop you will have the option to do an upgrade. That's how you do a repair install. The upgrade option is not just for legacy editions of Windows or to a higher edition of Vista. You can 'upgrade' Vista Ultimate to itself as well.
