| | Upgrading Vista RC1 to Full Commercial Release Version Hi there, I've recently installed a clean version of Vista Ultimate RC1 on my computer. Firstly it seems to be a great piece of kit although because I only managed to receive the Build 5600 version on DVD before Microsoft brought the "free versions for the masses" gate crashing down. I've not been able to run such trusted applications as Norton Internet Security etc (wrong version of Vista apparently) but in general it's been OK. My question is this: Will I be able to keep all my files and folders on my computer when I install the official release of Vista or will I have to do a clean install and back up everything on a million CD's before I put the full version on to replace RC1? I suppose I could keep RC1 on my computer until it dies in June (or whenever the trial period ends) but as mentioned earlier because I can't get Build 5744 anywhere and ongoing software problems with 5600 I'll really have to get the full version earlier rather than later!. Any commets would be appreciated. |

| | Re: Upgrading Vista RC1 to Full Commercial Release Version You should be able to ugpgrade an x86 RC1 with a full edition of Vista Ultimate. You will not be able to do so with an upgrade edition (pre-release software uses evaluation copy licenses) or with anything below Vista Ultimate (that's what RC1 was) since that would involve a "loss of functionality" and a clean install would be required. You can back up your files and settings with the Windows Easy Transfer wizard to shiny media, a network drive, or a second hard drive (internal or external) in the event you cannot perform an upgrade-in-place. You should do so in any case before starting the upgrade. | | Re: Upgrading Vista RC1 to Full Commercial Release Version His suggestions are good. If you're looking for a simple answer a complete system backup should be able to restore to a retail copy of Windows Vista (Though I can't be 100% sure). I would suggest this in addition to the other suggestions. "Colin Barnhorst" wrote: > You should be able to ugpgrade an x86 RC1 with a full edition of Vista > Ultimate. | | RE: Upgrading Vista RC1 to Full Commercial Release Version Norton, as it stands now, will not work with VISTA, at least as far as I've been able to determine.
