I need help

    I need help

I have tried installing 64bit time and again and it keeps dying at the same
point. I get all the way through and reboot to Windows Installing. I get the
green screen with everything happy on the top screen and the two sections on
the bottom screen, left section done, right section 75% done then BSOD. I get
a message in the BSOD about my ATI Radeon X1600 Pro PCIexpress and that is
all. I seem to be the only one unable to install 64bit RC1 and I don't get
it. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks,

    Jonk

    Re: I need help

    Hi Jane,
The motherboard is an Intel D9785XBX with a Pentium D Duo Core processor.
The leading error code I see is 0X0000116 and also a line about atikmag.sys
failing. I was able to install the previous version of 64bit beta but not
RC1. I know it's becoming moot soon as the release is nearly here but I am
gun shy about purchasing if I can't get this going. I also want to find out
what in drivers and security options are available on the 64bit side. I have
XP64 and it's gotten better but I don't think I could switch to it totally
    either yet.

    Thanks,

    jonk

    Re: I need help

If you go to www.microsoft.com and enter 0x00000116 (you
dropped one zero) in the search box, you will be presented
with 2 links. Both tell you "The VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check
has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to
reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed."
which probably means the video driver is not compatible with
    the particular edition of Vista.

The Microsoft web site has a wealth of information freely
available to anyone who desires to search for information -
    and the information is all F R E E ! !

    Re: I need help

It would really be helpful if you were more forthcoming on information. If
you are upgrading, you should remove the video card driver before attempting
the install. If you are doing a clean install, some here have gotten
installed by supplying newer drivers, and some reported replacing the video
card with an older model, then being able to reinstall after Vista
    completes.

    Re: I need help

I am sorry I haven't given more information. I am doing a clean install as
the upgrade option is not available. The driver being used is the one
installed by Vista as this is happening at the very end of setup when Vista
is trying to boot itself for the first time. I have no way of substituting
another driver at this point, at least I don't know how to do this if it is
possible. I do not have an older PCI express card available and the board
does not have an AGP slot for me to use the card from my older PC. Also the
motherboard does not have integrated graphics which I could use maybe if that
was there. Thank you to all who have tried to help me.

    Jonk,

Do you currently have all major Devices, i.e. printer, scan, copy, modem,
router, and wishfully Broadband connected to your computer *before* inserting
    the Vista Install DVD?

Must have Internet source first connected to the computer before Installing
    Vista.

Reason, Vista scans and wipes the HDD for self-removing malware and other
threats, before Installing Vista, for enhancing Security !

    Re: I need help

Yes at the time of installation all is connected including the broadband
connection. I am doing a clean install to a second hard drive in the PC and
multi booting so yes all of my normal connections are in place. I gave
disconnecting the DVI Video and just trying the VGA connection a shot but
that didn't help either. Right now the BSOD is just a flash and I can't get
anymore information off it. I looked up the error code as Thor suggested and
yes found what he said but unfortuneately nothing much more to give me a work
around to this. He said it is trying to use an incompatible drive, it is
using the Microsoft driver as this is still first boot up after the
installation and the only drivers there are the ones Microsoft created and
put on the install disk. I have a Microsoft created DVD installation disk not
a downloaded the iso image and I built the disk version. Thanks for your help.

Re: I need help - perhaps your ati radeon x1600 is the cause?

hey there. i have almost the same type of graphics card as you do, and i am
getting the same error as you. i am upgrading from XP Pro to 32 bit Vista
Ultimate with an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro AGP graphics card.

On that 0x00000116 error screen, it suggests to dissable the cache on your
BIOS chip before installing. I am currently in the process of following that
advice....who knows how that will turn out? in an hour from now i may be
    dead.

i just noticed now, the ati radeon website has vista drivers for the card:
    http://ati.amd.com/technology/windowsvista/index.html

perhaps, before doing the windows install you remove the ati catalysit
software, use the standard vga graphics driver windows assigns to your card,
then upgrade/clean install vista, and then install the new vista ati
catalysit drivers (they do have a 64 bit version too).

Re: I need help - perhaps your ati radeon x1600 is the cause?

okay, well forget about what i said above. because i still get the error.

the old win xp pro driver for the ati radeon x1600 doesn't have the file
atikmdag.sys. the new one for vista does. me thinks the vista installation
program needs to be passed the ati radeon x1600 driver 'atikmdag.sys.'
