Vista - A Vista setup issue

I have the RTM version of Vista (with appropriate product key). In trying
to do an upgrade over XPSP2, things go along smoothly until "Completing
Upgrade" gets to 64%. The setup sequence does not go beyond this point, for
as much as two hours (the longest I've waited). No error messages of any
kind -- just no activity beyond 64%. I've tried three times with the same
result (a working definition of insanity).

My printer and scanner are both good hardware but a few years old. I'm
thinking I might unplug them and try again. I've disarmed my anti-virus and
spyware programs, and that didn't help.

I have a perfectly good installation of XPSP2, so I'll get little if any
additional functionality from Vista.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might accomplish a fully
successful upgrade?

Have you tried a clean install to see if it's a hardware problem or
something from XP causing the problem? Did you run the Vista upgrade
advisor?

An upgrade to an XP volume which has a significant amount of software will
sit at that point for a very long time. It can take several hours. I have
seen it take three or four hours with just a modest amount of software
installed in XP. I suggest that you try removing as many of your apps, if
not all, and defragmenting before trying the upgrade. I found that
reinstalling apps after the upgrade took significantly less time than doing
the upgrade with the apps still installed. The critical step seems to be
the defrag run.

Thank you for these observations. Apparently I just have not allowed enough
time. Four hours rather than two would be better! Upgrade Advisor said I'm
good to go for Ultimate, which strengthens your suggestion about allowing
more time -- that and not getting any error messages.

Also removing unneeded external devices for the upgrade (USB, etc.) might
also speed up the process.

It is better to have ONLY screen, keyboard and mouse connected when either
upgrading or clean installing an operating system..
