XP2 Upgrade to Vista Home Premium hangs at 'Gathering Information'

I am attempting to upgrade my XP SP2 to Vista Home but it just hangs at the
'Gathering Information' stage.

Looking in the setup log dosn't show anything, the last entries in the file
being:

2007-02-04 20:27:39, Info [0x0805b5] MIG CheckSkuCompatibility:
upgrade allowed from Windows XP Home to Windows Vista Home Premium
2007-02-04 20:27:39, Info [0x080006] MIG Detected 21810 MB free on C:
2007-02-04 20:27:39, Info [0x080009] MIG Detected 0 reusable MB on C:
2007-02-04 20:27:39, Info MIG Setup requires 6757 MB on
windows partition
2007-02-04 20:27:39, Info MIG Setup requires 348 MB on
system partition

I've left it for hours at this and nothing happens, no errors, nothing.

Out of curiosity here, did you ever dual boot this system with another os?
I know that I installed a long time ago on my old Win98 machine, Solaris
x86. A UNIX os. And I was able to dual boot it. I got tired of it
after a while and just inserted a micro floppy and booted it with a back
up copy of windows to do an FDISK/MBR on the hard drive.
Well, after rebooting I got an OS not found error. I then used the OEM
CD to reinstall the os and after the installation was done, I still got
an OS not found error. Apparently some things are not overwritten or
erased and may be your problem. But then that is my guess.

Hmmm... you may want to check with Dell and see if they have any new
drivers for the download. From all that I've read, it is the drivers
that seem to be causing the majority of problems.
