Upgrade Error: Could Not Update Boot Configuration

Upgrading from XP Pro SP2 to Vista Business VLK terminated with the following
error:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation
cannot proceed"

Reviewing the setupact.log reveals the following error (hard to find but
search is your friend):

Apologies in advance if the formating is funky for the error message.

I have checked the registry and PartMgr is the default value as others have
referenced. Has anyone seen this error or have an idea how to fix it?

Thanks,

Lance

Re: Upgrade Error: Could Not Update Boot Configuration

its a long shot, but do you by chance have boot sector virus protection enabled in the bios.

RE: Upgrade Error: Could Not Update Boot Configuration

Hello Lance,
What is in the boot.ini file?
Is the drive NTFS? What permissions are on drive itself? ( right-click on
the drive check properties, then security tab)

Thanks,

RE: Upgrade Error: Could Not Update Boot Configuration

Here's the boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"
/noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The drive is NTFS, nothing noteworthy in the security permissions, admins
only lack the special permissions flag, which I assume is normal. Admin
group, including my account, is listed as owner.

Fwiw, I tried again last night on the administrator account. Same error. I'd
be happy to mail you the full log if you think that would help.

Thanks,

Lance

RE: Upgrade Error: Could Not Update Boot Configuration

I am too upgrading from XPPRO Sp2 to Vista Enterprise. The installer came
back reported "Windows could not update the computer's Boot Configuration?"
I do not have the log with me, but I can get it, and upload it if you need it.

I will check with the BIOS Virus Protection tonight, but I do not think it
is enabled.

Anything you can help with would be appericated. I am trying my best not to
do a full-format and reinstall. I just want to upgrade.

Vista Upgrade error: could not update boot configurationinstallation will now terminate~

I have the same problem here upgrading from XP home to Vista Ultimate.

I have tried twice to run the install but it doesn't get past the expanding files part of the upgrade. It gives me the erorr about not being able to update/modify the boot configuration and will stop the installation process right there.

I can't find anything anywhere else on the web about this problem. i have searched for more than an hour already. There's got to be something i can do to make it actually finish the installation process.

any help or feedback on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: Vista Upgrade error: could not update boot configurationinstallation will now terminate~

This issue may occur if the UpperFilters registry entry has become
corrupted or is set to a blank value. Certain programs that may be
installed on the computer may have modified this registry entry.

This registry entry is located in the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Value name: UpperFilters
Value type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Value data: PartMgr (default)

Back to the top
RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These
problems might require that you reinstall the operating system.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the
registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, restore the default value for the UpperFilters
registry entry, and then restart the computer. To do this, follow these
steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. In the results pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click
Modify.
4. In the Value data box, type PartMgr, and then click OK.
5. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
6. Insert the Windows Vista DVD, and then upgrade the computer to
Windows Vista.
