Re: TOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure): how to fix it in Vista Ulti

At the beginning of Jan I ordered:

4 x Western Digital SATA II 750GB
1 x Promise RAID Controller
2 x GeiL DDR2 800Mhz 4GB (total 8GB)
1 x Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R P35
1 x Intel CORE 2 Q6600

running Vista 64 Ultimate which I installed.

All the drives and the RAM passed the various shop testing including a
full mem86 test cycle.

The OS installed without issue but when I needed to do the first
post-install reboot it failed with the BSOD and STOP C0000218. About
once every 8 boots it would actually work. When it was running
sometimes it would crash and often it would not shut down properly.

Coincidently the next day the mobo died and it was back at the shop for
a new mobo. I told the technicans about the 2 problems; dead mobo and
the BSOD.

They have now spent about 4 days working on the BSOD problem and appear
to have tried most combinations of everything and so I can help to
elimate many of the theories posted here (and many of which have been
disproven already anyway).

It is stable with 2GB of RAM. It is not stable with 4GB. It is
especially not stable with 8GB. Installing the OS with 2GB, fully
patching it and then putting in the 8GB does not work.

They have tried about 4 different video cards and it made no
difference.

They have tried about 4 different types of RAM and it made no
difference.

Note that I am not connecting the drives to the mobo. They are running
off a Promise RAID controller. This may further add weight to the idea
that it may not be a gigabyte issue at all; rather it is a problem with
the OS.

They have not tried to run it without RAID, nor have they tried to have
RAID in combination with non-RAID boot drive.

I have told them that if they can get it running reliably with Vista
32bit then I will sign off on it. They will be happy to see the end of
me! I plan on getting a raptor while I am there tomorrow to act as a
boot disk based on what I have been reading here.

From my experiences and what I have been reading here it looks like it
is just another Microsoft screw up. This does not surprise me, but
what does is why has it taken 12 months after Vista's release for the
community stumble across this problem? Why was it not found much
earlier - or is that because no one has been running Vista up to now?

Put all conclusions of that last post on hold for the moment - word from
the shop is that they cannot get it running any differently in Vista 32
either!?

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure)

I have disabled the Gigabyte Raid controller in BIOS and now I am using the onboard SATA controller with 4GB of RAM. No BSOD yet, 2 days and lots of reboots.
By the way this problem has not just suddenly appeared, look at the date on the opening post... Feb 2007.

can you still run a RAID setup by disabling the gigabyte raid controller
in the bios though?

No, the gigabyte raid controller is the only raid controller. The intel ports x4 do not support raid

Still no BSOD!!
If you want to use 4GB then don't use the Gigabyte Raid ports.

Re: TOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure): how to fix it in Vista Ulti

I considered replacing the motherboard with an 'ASUS'
(only 49.99 now on Newegg), but it appears the ASUS P5B-VM has the same
'problems' (http://tinyurl.com/23cw3j).

It also has the JMicron JMB363, so it looks like the problem is either
JMicron's drivers, or Windows itself. It looks like the safest bet is
to go for a motherboard with a different raid controller.

Has anyone found a cheap deal on a motherboard replacement (preferably
micro ATX) that works?

New Gigabyte SATA2 RAID drivers released on May 30th, 2008

http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Mot...ProductID=2551

if anyone wants to test these out and see if they fix the 4GB RAID
issues, would appreciate it :|

Re: TOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure): how to fix it in Vista Ulti

edit:
result: its not working again - just lucky restarts

hi,
I just tryied that new raid drivers and 2 restarts without BSOD, so try it also to check that its now workiiiing I use Raid0 in purble gigabyte sata ports. 2x2GB Patriot RAM.

link to new driver is also on product page of your mobo

please confirm that its working, because it could be just 2 lucky restarts

At the same time I was checking my computer with DriverAgent.com (GB offers it on driver page, so I tryied it), and it found 1 bad driver - Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller - so I updated it, but I think its not because of this (i dont have any IDE stuff), just writing that for sure

Re: TOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure): how to fix it in Vista Ulti

Well, I seem to be having the exact same issue, and it does look to be a
RAID + Windows + 4GB of RAM issue...

Currently my setup is as follows:

OS: Vista Home Premium 64-Bit
MOBO: ASUS Rampage Formula
CPU: Q9300
RAID: Promise TX4310
HDD: 4 x Seagate 500GB 32MB Buffer
RAM: OCZ 4GB PC2-8500 2x2GB

I have tried only plugging the drives into the RAID controller and it
still gives me the c0000218 BSOD, though Everest logs that there have
been no BSODs. Mind you this is on and off, sometimes it boots,
sometimes it does not. With a single 2GB stick, I don't have any issues
booting.

Though my other system is as follows:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
MOBO: ASUS M3A
CPU: AMD X2 6000+
RAID: Onboard controller disabled and not used
HDD: 1 x Seagate 500GB 32MB Buffer
RAM: 4 x 1GB Rendition PC2-5300

No issues at all on this system, though I am assuming that is because
the RAID controller is disabled and I'm not using the RAID ports.

Overall this looks to be a general Windows issue, though I can't say I
have tested these setups on any other operating systems, so I can't say
that for sure. What I will do now though is check for an update on the
Promise RAID controller and see if that will fix the issue.

Cheers,

ceLL
