What is IIS and what does it do?

it is server software, like if you were going to have a web server.
Equivalent to Apache in Linux.

I was just wondering because I used to see it in event viewer now and then
in XP.Yello question mark saying the service was not installed or is turned
off.
In other words it is not needed unles you want to run a server,right?

that is correct, and if your going to run a server I would use Linux with
apache. I had to change hosts once because of the IIS troubles.
