    64-bit Installation woes, help?

    Hi,
I downloaded the 64-bit beta 2 and I can't seem to install it on my machine.
The system doesn't even get to the point where I see a dialog box of any
sort. It goes through the initial DOS-like "loading files" screen, then it
goes through the XP-like loading bar, then it gets to this teal colored
background screen where I get a mouse cursor and freezes there eventually.

My hardware configuration is as follows

    AMD Opteron 165 (dual-core) CPU
    Asus A8R MVP (05/03 BIOS)
Sapphire X800GTO2 256 MB PCIe video card
Seagate 7200.7 200 GB hard drive (with several partitions)
    Pioneer 109 DVD-ROM
NEC 2510 DVD burner (used to install)

Any ideas what's causing the problem?

Well, there are many colored phases of setup, where did you reach? Did it
begin copying files? Did it almost complete setup? How was setup launched,
from within an existing version of Windows or your booted from the DVD?

Whichever one the first phase is, this is where it freezes. Like I said, I
get the XP-like loading screen where it says "Microsoft Corporation 2006" or
something along those lines. When that stops, I get this blue-teal screen
and a cursor appears. There's nothing that happens after that, I have control
of the cursor for a little while, then it just freezes and I can't move the
cursor any more. As far as I can tell there's nothing that gets copied or
loaded (at least there's no indication that there is).

    check on
the ISO to find out its integrity. Nero MD5 Verifier is a recommended
choice. If setup still fails, its likely a bad download.

I use the one from Ahead Nero
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html

Here are the MD5/CRC values for x86 or x64 depending on which every ISO you
    downloaded:

    x86
    - File Size = 3.12 GB (3,355,598,848 bytes)
    - CRC Value = 0x67E089E0
    - MD5 Value = 0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773
    x64
    - File Size = 4.01 GB (4,309,368,832 bytes)
    - CRC Value = 0x48697711
    - MD5 Value = E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04

Paste the MD5 Checksum for either x64 or x86 depending on which one you want
check in Step 1, Step 2 - Browse to where you stored the ISO on your drive
and open it and it will automatically start the varification process and
generate the has in the third field, if it matches Step 1, then you are
    safe.

Already checked it, the ISO is fine. I've also burned it to 2 DVDs to make
sure it wasn't a bad burn

Andre, if it helps any, it would appear that Chris is having exactly the
same problem I'm having - see my thread from yesterday (which you responded
to) titled "Installation from bootable DVD problem".

The only difference is that Chris is installing the 64 bit version, while
I'm attempting to install the x86 version of Vista.

I'm getting this problem on my Compaq computer (V2000Z) running an AMD
Turion64 ML-37 (2.0ghz, which in Pentium terms, is probably 2.8+)

exact same problem. I get a little farther along than you -- I am able to
click "install now" -- but it freezes on "Please wait..." and then throws an
    exception.

The burn is fine, and it's getting EXTREMELY obnoxious that all anyone on
here suggests is to reburn the ISO. The burn is NOT the problem.

It doesn't help that most of the questions being asked in the forum are
obviously not being asked by "developers, IT professionals and technology
experts". If the MVPs weren't so tied up answering questions like "can I
install on my E: drive instead of my C: drive?", something might actually get
    accomplished here.

I'm having nearly the same problem as you, except that I don't get to the
"install now" prompt. The system locks up (mouse freezes, with no drive
activity), and reboots spontaneously 20-30 seconds later.

I am also seeing freezes on the Vista x64 beta. But where it freezes is
    totally random.

Each boot goes through the "loading files" progress bar on a black screen.
Past that the screen with the side scrolling grey dot passes and the Vista
installer starts. From here it crashes at any point and gives me no
notification of doing so (I usually notice when the optical mouse powers
    down).

So far, it has frozen 3-4 times whilst initialising the keyboard and mouse
before showing the initial install window, numerous times at any arbitrary
point between entering the product key and creating a partition to install
to, and once it even got to copying the files from the DVD and made it to the
"Expanding Files" phase of installing before freezing totally. All freezes
have happened once the GUI has started (note: not the black screen).

    My hardware is:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ in an Asus A8V-E Deluxe motherboard
    2GB ECC registered DDR400 (PC3200) memory
    200GB Seagate SATA drive
    nVidia GeForce 6600GT video card

My DVD has verified as burning correctly, with MD5 sum of
