| | Re: Installing windows 64bit with a 64bit cpu, but vista says I dont.. Are you certain this is a 64 bit CPU -- the Sempron chips for the 754 motherboard are in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions -- but I *think* the 3100 is a 32 bit CPU. It is based on the 64 bit core, but is not 64 bit. http://www.trustedreviews.com/cpu-me...3/AMD-Sempron- 3100-/p1 Well, the Sempron 3100+ differs from the other Sempron chips since it’s derived from the Athlon 64 family rather than the older Athlon XP, which makes it a much more interesting product. The Sempron 3100+ does however lack 64bit support, so don’t expect to be able to run 64bit Windows XP on it when it arrives. On the plus side, AMD has kept the support for EVP or Enhanced Anti Virus Protection, which will at least prevent some viruses from being executed on your PC, but not all. This does however only work as long as you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. First of all, let’s clarify a few things; the Sempron 3100+ is only available for Socket-754 and not the newer Socket-939, which seems strange, especially when you consider that AMD will move all its Athlon 64s to the new platform. This means that anyone who has invested in the Socket-754 motherboard will only be able to get Sempron processors for it once AMD discontinues the Athlon 64 for this platform. In any event, that motherboard maxes out at 2G of RAM -- so you will likely be better served going to 32 bit Vista even if you replace the 32 bit Sempron with a 64 bit 754 CPU. -- Barry Schnur |
