| | Windows Easy Transfer (migwiz) hangs on install to source machine (XP) I searched for this problem, but I can't find it. I bought a new PC running Vista Ultimate. I have it networked into my home network. My old PC running XP Professional (SP2) is also on this network. I would like to transfer settings using Windows Easy Transfer. When I try to install migwiz on the XP machine, it seems to hang. I originally tried executing MigSetup.exe from a folder on the Vista machine. I immediately saw "Starting Windows Easy Transfer" show up in the taskbar. But then it seemed to take forever so I killed it, copied the migwiz folder over to the XP machine, rebooted XP, and tried executing it from there. However it just sat there for quite a while and nothing happened. So I killed it again and rebooted XP. Then I had the Vista machine make a CD for moving it to the XP machine. Loaded it in the CD drive, and it took off. Again, it seemed to hang. I brought up Task Manager and it showed no applications running. However, migwiz showed up under processes. For awhile migwiz was utilizing CPU; eventually it went to 0. Still no application showing. Still nothing starting. By this time I was sure that one or more of my earlier abortive attempts had screwed something up and was preventing it from running, so I rebooted the XP machine back to a restore point before I had begun any of this madness. Still the same behavior: A window opens saying "Starting Windows Easy Transfer" with a progress bar. When that is done, the window closes, and I immediately see "Starting Windows Easy Transfer" show up in the taskbar. Task Manager shows the migwiz.exe process using CPU. Eventually CPU goes down to 0. Application never shows up in Task Manager. I'm about ready to forget Windows Easy Transfer, but I thought that first I'd ask if anyone has any idea what might be the problem. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. |

| | RE: Windows Easy Transfer (migwiz) hangs on install to source machine Hello KatesMom, Perhaps we can take a few steps back and retrace some of your steps. 1. You created the Wizard onto the Cd using Windows Easy Transfer on your Vista machine? 2. Next, you took this CD to your XP Machine and loaded it? 3. Can you provide details on what did and what you saw on the screen from here on? Please do not kill any tasks from task Manager. Close any opens Application that WET lists for you to close. At the point of failure, please go to the following directory on your XP (source machine) and look for the file, setupact.log located here: \\Documents and Settings\<userprofilename>\Local Settings\Application Data\MigWiz and post the last several lines of the log. Cheers! -Vik "KatesMom" wrote: > I searched for this problem, but I can't find it. I bought a new PC > running Vista Ultimate. I have it networked into my home network. | | RE: Windows Easy Transfer (migwiz) hangs on install to source mach Has the problem with WET hanging in the XP environment been addressed somewhere? I've been to numerous sites looking for a solution but everyone with this problem seems stuck just like I am. I get numerous listed in the error log but cannot locate the cause.
