Is it possible to buy vista home premium with activation key ?

I bought a computer that has a hidden recovery partition from zoostorm , it
comes with vista home premium pre-installed and has the authentic vista
sticker on the side of the base unit with serial.
It doesnt come with rescue disks , so is it possible to buy a Windows Vista
Home Premium DVD on its own without activation key ?
If so , where could I buy it from ?

No, not from MS. Contact the computer manufacture for info on creating a
recovery disk, or purchasing something from them.

Is it technically illegal for a friend to give a copy of his Vista DVD?

No. When you buy a copy of Vista, you pay for the licence to use it and
not the media. As long as he has his own key/CoA, then he can use
whatever media he wishes, even downloaded from P2P.

If you have a friend that has a Vista, you can copy their Vista DVD onto a blank DVD for yourself. (clone it) Just make sure you use only your ID key & not your friends or you'll run into EULA problems.

I can't speak to the technically illegal aspect. You have to read the
license agreement about making backup copies and their use. That said, if
the person has a legitimate product key for Vista, then I don't see the
problem with what you ask.

i thought it was illegal to use P2P ?? If I was to download a copy of a
Vista DVD that was in someone's share but then use my own key to activate ,
would this be illegal ?
Its frustrating for me to pay so much money for a Vista Home Premium DVD
that would come with another Activation Key that I would not need :/
If someone can confirm if downloading a copy of the dvd is illegal or not
then please let me know.
Many Thanks.

I don't know about P2P, but I would not trust a copy like that. Only from a friends actual original dvd. In the EULA it says that Vista is Licensed not sold. This means (to me) that you buy the PID# not the Vista OS. So as long as you have a legal PID#, you can install from any Vista copy that your PID# is assigned for. Plus, the PID# can only be activated on one computer at a time. May be wrong?

Here's the link to Microsoft's License agreement for Vista, read it to see if you come to that conclusion to or not :

http://www.microsoftvolumelicensing.com/userights/ProductPage.aspx?pid=232

Here's a small exert:

Microsoft Desktop Operating Systems
A. General License Terms. You have the rights below for each license you acquire.
I) Installation and Use Rights.
Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device (physical hardware system). That device is the ”licensed device.” You may not reassign that license to another device. A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
A. Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the software on the licensed device. You may use the software on up to two processors on that device at one time. Except as provided in the Storage section below, you may not use the software on any other device.
B. Number of Users. Except as provided in the Device Connections and Other Access Technologies sections below, only one user may use the software at a time.
C. Use with other software. You may not use the software’s runtime and other files to run applications not running on the software.

II) Additional Licensing Requirements and/or Use Rights.
Storage. You may store one copy of the software on a storage device, such as a network server. You may use that copy to install the software on any other device to which a license has been assigned.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm not a lawyer, I can't speak to the legality of it. I wouldn't trust a
download, and certainly not a download of an OS.

P2P is not illegal per se. It's what get's shared, and the copywrite
considerations that are the issue.
