Vista - Vista activation problem

I purchased Vista ultimate x64 edition about a month ago and i got it activated no problem. today i downloaded an update and after the computer restarted, it told me i needed to activate windows. so i tried to activate my copy and its telling me that i the product key i entered was already in use. i also tried to activate by phone and that didnt work either. does anyone know whats going on here?

did u talk to customer care executive. they will give you the activation key
for activation by phone. I don't have any idea y this has happened after
update installed may be u may have added or replaced some hardware.

I suspect Microsoft really screwed up the whole activation process since I
have couple of first-hand accounts of avtiation suddenly needed. I have
Vista Business and even after I activated it, some of the wallpapers still
have marked in the lower left-hand corner "not a genuine product, la de da
de da". Even my Flight Simulator X suddenly one day had to be activated. I
no longer use it and went back to Flight Sim 2004.
