Vista - Is it safe to install using no updates option?

Is it acceptable to install Vista using the option for it NOT to search for
updates?
The reason I ask is that I am about to reinstall Vista for the 8th time
because it keeps insisting on installing the wrong drivers for ATI and for
my Motorola Bluetooth dongle and the system seizes up completely.

The second question is, if I choose (in System protection) for Vista NOT to
detect new hardware will that finally stop this endless cycle of unusable
installations?
Then I assume, all I'll have to keep an eye on is MSFT Updates to make sure
they don't sneak in that way.

3rd question is, the last install could have been saved if System Restore
had worked. I know booting into XP wipes SR points in Vista, but I never
did boot into XP yet it spent all night trying to restore, without success,
obviously. Does XP wipe the SR points anyway, whether or not you boot into
it in a dual boot situation?

You should be able to uninstall the wrong udates and mark them as hidden not
showing again, they will be blocked that way!

Acceptable ??? - well it is technically feasible but you will not be patched
and updated.
So you will miss various critical security updates - but that is OK as you
can add them all later.

Then manually update and only select those you wish to see and permanently
hide any that you do not wish to be applied or displayed as needing to be
applied.

You can choose for any single piece to not be re-detected during device
detection (post install).

Just hide any that you do not want to see and then set your automatic update
to check for updates but not automatically install them.

Indeed, I should have mentioned that, but am used to it and forget others
are not (yet).<GG>
From there you can uninstall the updates , and when they are presented
again, you can unselect, hide and select don't show this again.

I've just finished installing it and everything except the Bluetooth dongle
and so far it's OK. ATI Catalyst 7.4 only sees one side of the dual mode
graphics card, but that doesn't matter, I don't use two monitors.
I've set System Protection to never detect new hardware and Updates to
notify me before downloading or installing and so far, so good ;-)
