Installing program from a cd

This is probably a very basic question but its been driving me mad for the
past 3 hours..

I m trying to install programs for my ipod, camera, printer etc through cd's
onto my pc (I ve just upgraded to vista). I d expect a box to pop up and
guide me through installation but this doesnt happen. What I would of done at
this stage on xp would be to go to "my computer", find the e drive and run a
startup.exe file if there was one. On vista however if I go to "computer" I
can only find hard drives- where is the drive for my cd? Can I map one, if
so, how do I do that?

Thanks!

RE: Installing program from a cd

When you open Computer there are small arrow to the right side of the window.
Click on the one next to removable drives to expand.

Re: Installing program from a cd

So, in "Computer", your CD/DVD drive is not listed?

Start - Control Panel - Device Manager
Is your drive listed there?

RE: Installing program from a cd

Thanks for your quick response Paul. When I open Computer I can see the
pictures of the 2 hard drives I have, but I cant see anything that says
removable drives- where abouts should it be? If I havent got that, is it easy
to get?

Many thanks, Dan

Re: Installing program from a cd

Hi Dave, If I go into Device manager I can see

DVD/CD-ROM drives
- Slimtype DVD A

If i click on Slimtype, a box with 4 tabs opens entitled Slimtype DVD A
Properties, with the general tab saying:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and
to see if there is a solution available.

That doesnt look good- any ideas?

Thanks, Dan

Re: Installing program from a cd

You might try this..
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461
I had to do this after upgrading to Vista.. but I think I had a different
code number.

If that doesn't work, you might try deleting the device in Device Manager,
and rebooting. Vista should find the drive, and hopefully install the
correct driver.
