Vista Tutorial - vista stops install after file copy before 'file gathering' no err

trying to install vista complete; when it does the scan, says it will work,
no major problems, goes into copying files (finishes this 100%), then spends
about 2 minutes in 'gathering files' but never moves the counter off 0%, then
stops intallation without giving me any error codes or anything. How can I
figure out what is wrong and how to proceed?

What is the indication you get that the installation has stoped?

it gives me a message in the box that the installation cannot continue and
gives me the popup button to click for close. It also says that any changes
made will not take effect.
