Vista 32 and Vista 64 Dual Boot

Here is where I am at with my dual installation. I finally got my Vista 64 up and running with 4 GB of memory. Vista 32 was running with 4 GB of memory with no problem.

So with two Raid 0 set ups, one on an Areca 1210 Controller (Vista 32) and the other off of the Gigabyte 680SLI-DQ6 nVidia Raid Controller (Vista 64), I am unable to boot into the 32 if the 64 hard drives are physically connected. IF I physically disconnect the 64 Raid 0 hard drives, then I will boot into Vista 32 just fine. If the 64 Raid drives are connected, then it will boot into Vista 64.

Vista 32 was set up first. Vista 64 second.

In the Bios, I have the Areca card ahead of the nVidia controller for boot order. Both boot just fine, but I cannot boot into 32 while 64 is connected.

Is this a mystery, or is there some logical explanation and "FIX"?

When I go into the control panel, system properties, Advanced, settings, startup and recovery to set the first boot device, I am only given one option- VISTA!

Re: Vista 32 and Vista 64 Dual Boot

This board has 4 SATA........on page 41 and 42 of the manual it shows how to
setup RAID for the 1st and 2nd Channel of the 1st SATA as well as 1st and
2nd Channel of the 2nd SATA.Does this not translate into 2 RAID
configuration setups.............so why use a SATA addon card??

Actually there are 10 SATA ports. There are also two ports that are controlled by the Gigabyte Raid controller. The Areca Raid card is more reliable and faster than any on board controller on this board. Also, it is transferable, so that when I move to another board in November, the Areca goes to the new board and the original Raid Array is not disrupted.

Download and install either EasyBCD or VistaBootPro. Leaving all drives
connected, set up a second Vista entry for the system that isn't booted.

Thanks John, I downloaded VistaBootPro. Was wondering if I load it on my 64 Vista and then pick 32 for another boot, will that work as well as loading from Vista 32. Actually, right now I wouldn't know how to go from Vista 32 as the only way I can get it to Boot up is to disconnect the 64.

Do it like I said. That would be your Vista 64 with the Vista 32 drives
connected. Point the new entry to your Vista 32. You should then get the
dual boot screen when you boot up.

Re: Vista 32 and Vista 64 Dual Boot

Well I booted into Vista 64 and then downloaded EasyBCD. Unfortunately the only boot option that BCD gives me is "Vista" it doesn't distinquish between Vista 32 and Vista64. There are a few choices on the BCD menu, such as configure, menu.... Not sure if there is something that I don't understand or see. Not sure how to proceed. Any pointers?

Re: Vista 32 and Vista 64 Dual Boot

Open EasyBCD in your 64 bit system with the 32-bit system attached. Go to
Add/Remove entries. In the lower section Add an entry, click the arrow on
version and select Vista/Longhorn, Drive, point to the drive that the 32-bit
Vista is on, Change the name to something that is unique to your 32-bit
system. Click, add the entry and reboot. You should have a dual boot
screen with the two entries on it.
