During the install create one partition of whatever size you want the system
partition to be. I recommend at least 40 GB. Leave the rest of the space
unallocated. After Vista is installed run the disk management console
(diskmgmt.msc) and create more partitions.

Re: Partitioning HD

Hi, Gordo.

Yes - so long as you have space available on your hard drive to create the
new partition. As Kerry said, Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) is the tool to
use for this. It has been a part of every Windows version starting with
Windows 2000; the WinXP version was better and the Vista version has gained
even more capabilities.

If you already have unpartitioned space on the hard drive, then just
right-click on that space in DM's Graphical View and click New simple volume
to create a new one there, using all or just part of that space.

If your Drive C: covers the whole drive (the default condition for most new
computers, I think), then you can first right-click on Drive C: and use the
Shrink volume command (new in Vista) to make some Free space available to
create your new volume(s).

Re: Partitioning HD

In the past, I successfully used Partition Magic on several HDs w/ Win XP.
Now I got a new laptop w/ preinstalled Vista Premium and a 160GB HD. My
intention was to create three logical partitions: APPS, DOCS, and BUFFERS.
Uing Vista's own utility (under Control Panel/Disk Management) I "carved out"
a 48GB APPS, and an 18GB BUFFERS. APPS is identified as "healthy, primary
partition" and BUFFERS as "healthy, logical drive". Now here's the rub. I
tried to shrink APPS by 20GB, which was indicated as possible, to create
DOCS. What I got was 20 GB of unallocated space, and when I tried to create a
volume there, I got “there is not enough space available on this disk(s) to
perform this operation” error. I can extend APPS back into that unallocated
space, but that's all I can do. What was I doing wrong?

Re: Partitioning HD

Try creating Primary partitions instead of Logical partitions.

Good luck,
Jerry

Re: Partitioning HD

Don't mix Vista and non-Vista partitioning utilities. Vista's partitioner
aligns partitions on 1MB boundaries. There are also other differences
between Vista and pre-Vista formats and procedures. Read this and
go blind: http://www.multibooters.co.uk/
I've heard that the lates versions of Acronis's Disk Director and
TeraByteUnlimited's BootIt-NG are Vista-compatible.

Re: Partitioning HD

The latest versions of both are compatible and using pre Vista products has
resulted in problems for many, many of these problems only became obvious
later.
