| | IDE Controller question about installing. When I try to install Vista from boot it won't detect my hard drive. If I try to install from Windows XP it tells me I need to update my driver for "Promise Technology Inc. Ultra IDE Controller" I've looked on the newsgroups and found other people were having issues with this. The thing is I don't know which driver to download. I am currently running ultra.sys as my driver, Version 1.43 (Build 0603) under the name Promise Technology Inc. Ultra IDE Controller. The only thing is on www.promise.com under their drivers they have Ultra33, Ultra 66, Ultra 100, Ultra 100 TX2, and Ultra 133 TX2. My BIOS is the FastTrak 100 (tm) Lite, version 2.02.1.5. Funny thing is the latest version for the FastTrak BIOS on www.promise.com is only 2.00.0.24 Anyways, how do I check which IDE Controller I have? I'm thinking it may the Ultra 100, but I'm not sure. Thank-you, Will EDIT - Is there anyways I can back up my drivers now? I know during boot you can press F6 to install 3rd party RAID/SCSI drivers, so if worse comes to worse I can back up my drivers now in case I can't boot after installing new drivers. |

| | RE: IDE Controller question about installing. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers it says Primary IDE Channel Secondary IDE Channel Standard Dual Channel PC IDE Controller The Primary IDE Channel is using atapi.sys and storprop.dll File version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) Also, under SCSI and RAID controllers there is the Promise Technology one as well as a generic "SCSI/RAID Host Controller" "stardis" wrote: > What does it say under device manager > ide ata/atapi controllers? | | RE: IDE Controller question about installing. I assume you don't have an add-in card and your Promise controller is a chip on the motherboard. Seems like you should try to get an update for that from your motherboard manufacturer. Your primary ide channel is the same as mine. My scsi is a Uli chipset and I would try to update that from Gigabyte's (mb manufacturer) site-- if I needed to. Are you using an 80 pin cable? Is there an optical drive on the same cable? What mb are you using? Sorry I haven't been any help. |

| | RE: IDE Controller question about installing. I've looked into it more and it seems that a lot of people are having trouble installing XP using Promise drivers for ATA drives. Unfortunately, I have a laptop with Ultra 100 Promise drivers with a SATA hard drive. The only solution so far has been to install Vista by hooking the hard drive up using an IDE cable. Guess I'll have to wair for Microsoft to support it or wait for Promise to make a driver that will make my ATA drive compatible with Vista "stardis" wrote: > I assume you don't have an add-in card and your Promise controller is a chip > on the motherboard. | | RE: IDE Controller question about installing. I burned 2 CD's. One with the XP drivers for Ultra and another with the Win 2003 drivers fot SATA support. I had to burn the files on the root directory, but when Vista tried to install I popped in the CD's and it had to uncheck the "Hide drivers that are not compatible with this computer's hardware" I tried both the Win2003 and the Ultra 100 XP drivers but each time there was still no drive appearing after I hit Refresh. I tried about 3 times and still no luck. "stardis" wrote: > I assume you don't have an add-in card and your Promise controller is a chip > on the motherboard.
