    Stops Working During Compaction

Everytime I exit Windows Mail, it offers to compact the data. If I select
Yes, it displays a progress dialog that gets to around 75%, then pops a
message that says Windows Mail has stopped working. Mail is then restarted.
When I exit, it offers to compact the data again.

This is a lovely new twist. And may be related to something I've never seen
before with IE7: I did an online bank transfer and, before I could print the
confirmation, I got a message that IE had stopped working and was restarted.
Perhaps some people at Microsoft have stopped working?

    Nice.

    Any tips?

Download and install the WMutil program:
    http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx

First use its Repair function before you try its Compact function.

That did not eliminate the problem I'm having.

Can you be more descriptive? Did WMutil not appear to work at
all, or did it go through the motions but no improvement resulted?

If nothing else helps, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

The problem I was having is that when I exit Windows Mail, it offers to
compact the database, and if I tell it to go ahead, it runs to about 75% and
then Windows says Windows Mail stopped running and terminates and restarts
it. When I exit Windows Mail again, it offers to compact the database again.

I downloaded WMutil, ran the repair database command, and ran the compact
database command, it seemed to run but I found the UI lacking.

Now, Windows Mail does the exact same thing it did before.

This is the first I've heard of that. I'll take a look.

    Thanks.

When you install Windows Live Mail, it automatically imports all your
Windows Mail accounts, settings, and emails.
If you decide you don't like it, just uninstall, and Windows Mail is back.

I installed it and can't find a damn thing. Uninstallation commencing...

I guess finding out why Windows Mail doesn't work is a lost cause...

    Thanks.

Not sure what "can't find a damn thing" means.
Sounds like you did not like WLM, but a fair test would have
    taken somewhat longer...
