new mail window and contacts file slow to open

Whenever I hit "create mail" it can take up to 10 seconds before I can type anything. If a contact has multiple entries, it similarly takes up to 10 seconds before it presents the list and asks me to choose. Also, sometimes when I am in windows explorer and open or refresh the contact file, it similarly takes quite a while. I can watch the green progress on the path name in the upper bar slowly inch along. My contact file was created when Windows transferred my files from my XP system and automatically brought my outlook express files over. Does anyone else experience this poor performance? Any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Try the fix for Windows Mail sluggishness:
    Windows Mail Slow

Yup! Microsoft, in its usual fine form, immediately displayed its proud,
""File not found..check spelling etc" then waited 15 secunds to take me to
the Vista64 tutorial page (I'm running win32) where all of the fixes were
addressed . Still, Windows Mail is over three times as slow as AT&T/Yahoo
    mail.
