| | Windows mail keeps refusing to open Hi everyone, I have a vista laptop with the windows mail icon on the quick launch toolbar, most times I can click the icon and it opens so that I can check my mail. It, however, often refuses to open the icon and the only way I can get it to respond again is to shut my laptop down and re-start it. Does anyone out there have a solution to this? Thank You, Susan. |

| | Re: Windows mail keeps refusing to open The next time it refuses to start, do this: Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. Click the Processes tab, then click "Show processes from all users." Do you see an Image named "WinMail.exe"? If so, select it, then click "End Process." You should now be able to start Windows Mail. Windows Mail will not start as long as it is being held open elsewhere. We think the reason it sometimes fails to close properly is because it is being help open by an antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running? -- Gary VanderMolen [MS-MVP WLM] "Susan" <Susan@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:687AAB5D-64C1-402B-B0B2-0CA2B52E2233@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi everyone, > > I have a vista laptop with the windows mail icon on the quick launch > toolbar, most times I can click the icon and it opens so that I can check my > mail. | | Re: Windows mail keeps refusing to open Hello Gary, Thank you for your reply, I will certainly try this next time the icon refuses to open. The antivirus I am running is Norton. Thanks - Susan. Norton and McAfee have been known to cause problems with Windows Mail. I am also starting to see a few reports about the latest version from Trend causing some problems as well. See the FIRST section here for more on this. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/ Shawn |

| | Re: Windows mail keeps refusing to open If my suggestion does not help, or the problem keeps recurring, uninstall Norton. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not just disabled. After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download and install a more compatible antivirus like: AVG free edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff or Avast free edition: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom install, and then deselect the email scanning option. -- Gary VanderMolen [MS-MVP WLM] "Susan" <Susan@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:39006CE6-73CA-4012-BF94-CA9A24F5DE60@xxxxxx Quote: > Hello Gary, > > Thank you for your reply, I will certainly try this next time the icon > refuses to open. > The antivirus I am running is Norton. > > Thanks - Susan. > > "Gary VanderMolen" wrote: > Quote: >> The next time it refuses to start, do this: >> Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. | | Re: Windows mail keeps refusing to open Hello Gary, The problem has not as yet occurred again. Very grateful for your advice. I am quite wary of installing anything that is free and worry that the two sites you have suggested might not be as safe as the Norton. Are there any comparisons anywhere that you know of about the two sites and the Norton,McAfee etc? Thanks for your help - Susan.
