Turn Off Windows Mail

I have been trying for three days to disable Windows Mail - I use MSN as my
dial-up & they say that Windows Mail cannot be turned off - I have tried
"Default setting" to change - I have no "mailto" listed in the protocols to
change, and I even reset the properties on the Start Button to use MSN -
Nothing - I cannot send email as Windows Mail does not support MSN - Any help?

Good news and bad news. First the bad news. Windows Mail is part of the vista version, it cannot be removed. The good news is you can disable it.
1.) right click on Windows Mail (shortcut or folder),choose Properties
2.) click Security tab, click Edit.
3.) under DENY, check all the boxes.
4.) click APPLY, click OK.
That's it. Windows Mail is disabled. Please reply the result. Thank you.

Re: Turn Off Windows Mail

I don't understand your statement "I cannot send email as Windows Mail
does not support MSN." I thought you only used MSN Mail. Why don't you
simply not use Windows Mail, and only use MSN Mail?

If you want to use your MSN email address with a desktop email program,
use Windows Live Mail:

Re: Turn Off Windows Mail

Because ever time I go to write an email - the Window Mail comes up - I
compose an email - I enter my email address and then Window Mail give me a
message stating that Windows mail does not support my internet provider's
(MSN) protocols so it cannot send an email - I called MSN but they have been
unable to help. Since I cannot use my email address with Windows Mail - it's
useless. All I want to do is to disable this program. Can anyone help.
Thanks - Patton Puppy

Hi, I just tried it on my own computer, and it worked as stated. Did you click EDIT after SECURITY ? My OS is home premium, what's yours? Not that it should make any difference as long as it's vista. Please reply again. Don't give up.

Re: Turn Off Windows Mail

Windows Mail is very hard to disable without choosing another program
instead as your default mail program. I think Windows Live Mail is
one of the programs that can connect to MSN, in addition to taking
over any other accounts Windows Mail can handle:

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Also, Windows Mail is a part of Vista and very hard to uninstall without
doing the same to the rest of Vista. The closest you can come without
problems is to remove all the accounts under Windows Mail to keep it
from doing much if you start it, then deleting all shortcuts that lead to it
to make it hard to start.

Re: Turn Off Windows Mail

Well, I was able to click Deny for the security section - but when I tried to
write an email - Windows Mail came up so this does not work - Should I try to
contact Microsoft Tech Support & pay for a fix or is there no fix for this
problem.

Re: Turn Off Windows Mail

Thank you for your time but I do not want another email account - I do lab
rescue work & cannot change my email account - I want to be able to use my
internet provider - I have never used Outlook or this new Windows Mail - I do
not understand why I cannot use my computer the way I want to with the
programs that I want to use.

Patton, I am not giving up. After you had done with the DENY boxes, did you click APPLY first then OK ?? If you missed the APPLY, everything would be nullified the moment you closed the windows. Please reply again.
