| | mail being pilfered? Don't judge me as crazy yet. Ok, Windows Mail seems to pilfer my incoming emails from my server email account. I assume that is normal? However, as of today, my email is not only being pilfered by windows mail but is being deleted before I can read it. Any thoughts? I am not receiving an error message. I am not overly computer savvy so please be kind! -- bathsheba |

If this is not what you want, most but not all email servers will respond to this: Click on Tools in the main Windows Mail window, then Accounts, then your email account, then Properties, then Advanced. If there is no check mark in the box before Leave a copy of messages on server, click on this box, then Apply. It is a good idea to also select one of the methods of eventually deleting the messages from the server, to make sure the server doesn't get so many of your messages it refuses to accept any more, then click Apply. Click on OK, then Close. To make sure it isn't just hiding the mail as if it was already read, do this for each of the Local Folders: Click on the folder, then View, then Current View, then Show All Messages. What if any antivirus programs do you have, including any that came with the computer when it was new? Some of them tend to cause errors including hiding error messages, although seldom immediately. If you have the Google Toolbar program installed, uninstall it. It causes problems in Windows Mail. |

| | Re: mail being pilfered? Hello Robert, Thank you for the advice. I checked local folders and couldn't find any of my email. I suppose by not reading it I have no responsibility to respond! That should give me an extra hour or so to catch up on reading! I currently have McAfee which I installed after uninstalling Trend. However, there seems to be traces of Trend I can't get rid of...any suggestions? Can you answer me as to why Google Toolbar is a problem? Shouldn't they have nothing to do with each other? Thank you again Robert. -- bathsheba "robertmiles@xxxxxx" wrote: Quote: > > "bathsheba" <bathsheba@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:92EAA14F-730D-4E15-9C0C-5B2BCB335AEB@xxxxxx Quote: > > Don't judge me as crazy yet. | | Re: mail being pilfered? Trend has not provided a cleanup program to take care of what their uninstall leaves behind. Perhaps they should. Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program cause assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. So do most versions of the Norton antivirus program. These need to be uninstalled, not just disabled, to stop them from creating new problems. The cleanup program to take care of what the McAfee uninstall leaves behind is: <http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1> You may also need to remove your email account under Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again. The problems caused by the Google Toolbar program are not mentioned here often enough for me to remember them, but don't seem to have anything to do with which antivirus program you use. If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause such problems. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install where you tell it to leave out the part that scans email. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff If you'd like some antispyware programs as well, the two I use are Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html http://www.lavasoftusa.com/single/trialpay.php If you're using an antispyware program named Spy Sweeper, it seems to cause probems in Windows Mail if you're using port 25. If you have Spy Sweeper, you will need to either disable their e-mail attachment shield or change the e-mail attachment shield options to monitor port 10025 rather than port 25. | | Re: mail being pilfered? Robert, Thank you for all of the useful information and thank you for your patience. I am still learning. I will uninstall McAfee and install one of you suggestions. Also, you use 2 different spyware programs? Is there a reason for that..is it recommended? If I currently am using Spy Sweeper, can I uninstall it and use your recommendations? I would rather not leave my email vulernable so I would like to do the right thing. | | Re: mail being pilfered? You should use only one antivirus program, but can use more than one antispyware program. One of those antispyware programs is good at detecting any spyware that has already arrived, as well as cookies spyware could look for, and the other one is good at blocking connections to sites that have spyware. If you follow the steps to make Spy Sweeper safe, you can leave it installed if you want to, but the two antispyware programs I use should be enough. | | Re: mail being pilfered? Robert, Thank you for the spyware insight. I think that I will take your recommendation. I am trusting your knowledge and judgement. If I may trouble you again? Forgive me if you have answered this question 15 times already today, I share my computer and have found that windows mail does not seem to use separate accounts. Meaning that all of our emails are in one place, which leads to no privacy. Is there a way to resolve this?
