Inbox folders disappear

Hi there,

Can anyone shed some light on this please? Am using Windows Mail v6 on a
Toshiba Satellite laptop and after I have sent a couple of email messages and
then want to move the sent messages to relevant folders, my personal folders
under the inbox together with the standard mail folders (i.e. outbox etc)
have disappeared.

I close Windows Mail and open again and the relevant folders still do not
appear. Only once I have restarted my pc will the folders then appear. It
is most frustrating.

I am running the latest home version of AVG Anti Virus.

Your help will be much appreciated

I believe Toshiba is the company that includes a program with SMS in
its name on their new machines, even though this program interferes
with Windows Mail. Check your list of installed programs for such
programs, and if you find any, tell us their full names.

If the folder group headers with names such as Local Folders still
appear, with a triangle in front of them, click on the triangle and see
if that helps. If not, click on it again so it won't make things worse.

Did you use the standard install for AVG? If so, it sometimes causes
problems in Windows Mail. Uninstall it, then install it again where
you ask for a custom install and tell it to leave out the part that
scans email.

Re: Inbox folders disappear

Hello Robert,

So good to hear from you - thank you. I checked the programs on my laptop
and there is a shortcut for Desktop SMS - ComUnified.com. It is not
installed. I certainly don't need this application and can remove it if need
be.

The triangle appears on the local folder and when I click it, it shows me
the inbox. I just cannot progress down from the inbox to the personal
folders created there. No triangle appears on the inbox. Here's a thought -
Windows Mail converted this data from Outlook Express - do you think that
this may have something to do with the problems I am experiencing?

On AVG, I did the standard install and will unistall and take your advice on
this. The email scanner on AVG keeps warning me that it is not activate
despite my changing the status to active. Do I need AVG or should I just
work with Defender. Vista is all new to me and I really feel quite stupid
asking this question.

Regards

Sue

Re: Inbox folders disappear

Go ahead and remove the SMS program.

Someone else will have to help you with the folders that have disappeared.

AVG works better than Defender, so use it instead. Remember not to have
two antivirus programs enabled at once.

Re: Inbox folders disappear

Windows Defender is only for spyware, AVG is for viruses.
You need both. While you have AVG uninstalled, check to see
if Windows Mail is working properly. Then reinstall AVG using
the custom install option, which allows you to leave out the
mail scanning module.

Re: Inbox folders disappear

Hello Gary,

Thanks for your response received. I have both Windows Defender and AVG
running perfectly now and am not experiencing any problems (touch wood)!

Thanks to both of you for wonderful advice and support.

Re: Inbox folders disappear

Thanks for the kudos.
Windows Mail can be quite trouble-free when compatible security
software is used.

Re: Inbox folders disappear

The same problem has developed on my computer! All my folders disappear
though, if I click onto Local Folders then I can reset each folder
individually into the left pane so that I can see/access what is in them BUT
the minute I close out of Windows Mail and go back in or even shut down and
then start up again I have to do the process all over again. Incidentally, I
run ESET Smart Security and have NEVER had problems until just recently.
Actually, a short time after the SMS appeared. (I have uninstalled this).

Re: Inbox folders disappear

A recent version of the ESET antivirus program (details not available) has
beeen
known to cause problems in Windows Mail. You might want to ask its makers
if they're aware of this and what they plan to do about it. It used to be
on our
list of recommended antivirus programs, but it's no longer there. If they
aren't on
way to fixing the part of it that causes such problems soon, you may have to
uninstall it.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program
that
doesn't cause problems in Windows Mail. Most versions of the Norton and
McAfee antivirus programs and a recent version of the Trend antivirus
program
are bad choices; they cause problems more often than the ESET antivirus
program. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install
that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.
