totally unable to SEND email, even after reading this!

I have a brand new computer running Vista and the only emil program I have is
Windows Mail. I installed it and configured it but find that although I can
RECEIVE OK the mails I try to send get the error:
"An unknown error has occurred. Subject '', Account: 'mail.talktalk.net',
Server: 'smtp.talktalk.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554
smtp.talktalk.net', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error
Number: 0x800CCC6F"

I have checked the mail settings with the ISP and they are fine, I have read
the postings here and I can find no new clues, can anyone help? Please?
PLEASE?

At the moment I can receive emails through Windows Mail but only reply
through webmail!

Please, please help!

David

I had similar prob when got this machine on vista.

suggest you uninstall your present email/internet then reinstall with
talktalk setup disk. or by going to talktalk and using their lost account
process.

found problem similar when swopped to Three mobile internet. SMTP settings
seem to be poroblem there as well

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before it reaches the server? If so, such
connections
to port 25 are often blocked to cause problems for spammers, and you
need to ask that email provider if their outgoing mail server listens for
outgoing mail on any port other than port 25. Just trying all the ports is
a
very slow way to find out, since there are about 65,000 ports available.

See if this helps you find the correct settings:

Also, unknown errors in Windows Mail are often due to interference
from an antivirus program. What if any antivirus programs do you
have?

Are outgoing messages piling up in your Outbox? If so, try to move
all these messages to the Drafts folder or delete them. If you find
any that refuse to do either, let us know.

Re: totally unable to SEND email, even after reading this!

Download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
Certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and other problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a
program, remember where to find the hotfix and hope it will install
again if you need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus
program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.

This hotfix doesn't always delete such messages, but should at
least make it possible for you to do it.
