Windows cannot find 'http:// ----file path

Just started using vista on a new computer.
When I use a shortcut on my desktop to go
to a web page I get an error message
"Windows cannot find 'http:// - whatever web
page it is. Make sure you typed the name correctly,
and then try again."
After that the error message stays on the screen but the
web page will appear.
This is very annoying.
Anyone else had this problem ? Has anyone been able
fix it.
Thanks

Re: Windows cannot find 'http:// ----file path

This can happen when Internet Explorer doesn't have all of its
protocol defaults.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on Internet
Explorer. If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Re: Windows cannot find 'http:// ----file path

Gary
Sorry; forgot to say I am using Firefox.
Went to the default page and it said Firefox had all its defaults.
Check the defaults for Firefox and they are all checked.
Still having same problem. Don't have it with Internet Explorer just
Firefox.
Did check Internet Explorer also and it did not have all its defaults
only 3 out of 9. Did the set program thing and it changed to all defaults.
Any other suggestions on the Firefox issue.
Thanks

Re: Windows cannot find 'http:// ----file path

I'm not familiar with what is needed to make Firefox behave properly.
Perhaps someone else has that fix.
