Windows Mail Attachment with extention .doc can not openen

On my computer a file with the extention .doc is reconnissed as type : DOC-
bestand, and can not directly openend ! When I saved the document than can it
openend with the program Microsoft Office Word 2007 !
On a second computer with the same configuration, .doc is reconnised as
microsoft office word 97-2003 document, and there is no problem !
What can be the reason for the differences of the 2 computers ?
With XP it is possible to change a file type, but by vista I can not find to
do that !
