Windows Mail asking for username /password

I use Windows Mail and have had no trouble until now. When I try to access
my email, a window appears asking for my username and password. After I type
in the correct info, the same window appears and asks for username and
password, again and again without allowing me to send or receive email. What
is going on and how can I resolve this issue?

    Thanks!

Some email servers insist that you enter your username with no spaces and no
CAPITAL LETTERS. Some insist that you follow it with the part of your
email address that starts with @, and some insist that you don't. Many
    insist
that CAPITAL LETTERS in your password aren't the same as the matching
lowercase letters. With any of these problems, the error messages returned
by the server seldom tell you which problem they found.

I'm having the same issue. This afternoon is the first time it's ever asked this. I can do the web based email, so I know I'm giving the correct info (not a cap or spacing problem). It worked fine this morning, nothing was changed. I even called my internet provider, and of course - they passed the buck to Windows. So, what's up with this? would appreciate any help or ideas.

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not compatible
    with Windows Mail.

Symantec 10. if it is not compatible with Windows Mail, why does it case the
    problem immediately?

    Thanks

McAfee - But, it hasn't been changed. Could it be a virus?

Try this test - switch off your McAfee/Norton/whatever and see if the problem persists.

If suddenly everything works fine, then welcome to my world! (see my thread here)

So if downloading the suggested free anti-virus programs is the answer, but you still have to turn off incoming email scan, I ask again. What is the point of having anti-virus that doesn't check incoming emails for nasties?????

    Can someone please explain?

I, too, called my internet service provider, who also passed the buck to
Windows. I can use the internet-based email, so it's not an issue with the
    actual username and password (capitals/spacing).

This is also happening using Outlook Express on my desktop (I am currently
using Windows mail on my laptop). Both systems are using different
    anti-software.

Probably due to Symantec's rather odd idea of what compatible with
Vista means. Their Norton line of antivirus programs has been
causing problems with email programs starting even before Vista
was available. At least the Norton line usually takes a while to cause
problems in Windows Mail, often until it tries to block an incoming
virus. The parts of their Norton programs that cause problems in
Windows Mail aren't disabled when the rest of the program is disabled,
and often fail to be uninstalled when you try to uninstall the Norton
program. It isn't yet clear if they copied the problem causing parts
of the Norton antivirus program to any other antivirus program they
offer without the Norton name on it.
