| | New PC with Visa and Windows Mail.can't get onto e-mails -common p OK folks, bought a brand new desktop PC today that came with Vista and therefore Windows Mail. Have therefore been working my way through setting things up. 'PC World' in the UK also managed to get me to buy Norton 360 with my desktop as they had it on offer at 1/2 price with the purchase. Sounded like a good idea as previously I would run all sorts like AVG, ad-aware, Windows Defender with XP and so thought one Norton program would be more easy on the PC. So, when it comes to Windows Mail with Vista, I keep getting the usual thing others have experienced (from finding this site today and having been reading the posts), in that it comes up with a 'Windows Security' box asking for the user name and password when I hit the send/receive button (to retrieve my e-mails from my ISP). Upon inputing the info all I then get is:- Account: 'mail.vfast.co.uk', Server: 'mail.vfast.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Login failed.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92 So, based on other threads/post I've read, I've now duly unisintalled Norton 360 this evening as per the Norton Removal Tool.exe file that was posted somewhere on this site via a weblink. Also deleted the ISP e-mail account and then started over again without installing Norton 360...still no joy and get the same message and error! I see some people going on about ports in some other threads. I have sent a message to my ISP (www.Vfast.co.uk) to see if they have had this problem with other customers using Windows Vista and Windows Mail...needless to say, I never encountered this problem with my ISP when using Windows XP and Outlook. PS - vfast serve the rural parts of Kent, England, just in case you have not come across the name before from other posts. They should hopefully get back to me tommorow. Any tips, tricks and help would be greatly appreciated so I can get my e-mails at long last. |

| | Re: New PC with Visa and Windows Mail.can't get onto e-mails -common p You've already taken all the steps I would have suggested, so there's not much else to be done. To rule out Windows Mail as the cause of the problem, you would have to install and try a different email program, such as Windows Live Mail: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP "Granville2008" <Granville2008@xxxxxx> wrote in message news 4680854-5B26-42CB-967E-2775F674296A@xxxxxxQuote: > OK folks, bought a brand new desktop PC today that came with Vista and > therefore Windows Mail. A custom install of AVG where you tell it to leave out the part that scans works better with Windows Mail. |

| | Re: New PC with Visa and Windows Mail.can't get onto e-mails -comm Thanks Gary, I think it your post to others on this site are what made me conclude there is an issue with the likes of Norton working with Windows Mail. Anyway, have downloaded Windows Live Mail and having run that too now, I get something along the same lines:- "Unable to send or receive messages for the mail.vfast.co.uk account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account. Server Error: 0x800CCC90 Server Response: -ERR Login failed. Server: 'mail.vfast.co.uk' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92 Protocol: POP3 Port: 110 Secure(SSL): No" Will see what my ISP says when they get in touch...maybe reset the password at their end and try another; just in case. Defo don't have Norton installed. Checked all programs and so see no sign of it. Have Windows Firewall turned on though to provide some protection. | | Re: New PC with Visa and Windows Mail.can't get onto e-mails -comm There are also an issue with either most versions of the McAfee antivirus program or a recent version of the Trend antivirus program working with Windows Mail, so check for those too. Also, many new computers come with a trial version of either the Norton antivirus program or the McAfee antivirus program already installed, and the uninstall programs for them often fail to remove the parts of these programs that cause problems in Windows Mail. Some new computers come with a program called SMS Desktop and/or a program called Google Toolbar already installed. These programs also cause problems in Windows Mail, but using websites that offer a Google search doesn't. For help with Windows Live Mail, you're likely to get it faster if you ask in newsgroup: microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop "Granville2008" <Granville2008@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A309FC2F-A5F3-49D9-9316-4EE5450A3EA5@xxxxxx Quote: > Thanks Gary, > > I think it your post to others on this site are what made me conclude > there > is an issue with the likes of Norton working with Windows Mail. > > Anyway, have downloaded Windows Live Mail and having run that too now, I > get > something along the same lines:- > > "Unable to send or receive messages for the mail.vfast.co.uk account.
