Receive mail stopped working (Vista Windows Mail)

Hi: Vista Business, windows mail. Problem receiving.

Receive hangs on one of the messages. I now have a number of messages
received mulitple times, Windows mail then gets to 'receiving message 7 of
(currently) 21, and hangs.

Sometime I get an error saying that the server has timed out. (No response
for a minute)

Was Perfectly OK last week. (and for a few weeks since getting my new laptop
with Norton!)

So, it downloads the first 6 messages, gets stuck and times out on the 7th,
with or without Norton.

And of course, since it gets stuck, doesn't clear from the server, which is
why the first six keep coming down.

I think I am now on SP1, have uninstalled Norton to no effect. I think the
problem mail has an Access attachment about 2 meg in size.

Anyway, was OK last week, not now. receive is from oneandone, send from
either oneandone or eclipse makes no difference.

Any thoughts please?
-Could this be an autotuning issue arsing from a recent auto update??

Thanks
David

RE: Receive mail stopped working (Vista Windows Mail)

With help. Opened Firewall, then e-mail, then INBOUND TURN TO OFF, then
OUTBOUND TURN TO OFF worked. Hope this helps.

In this case, you may need to see if you can log onto the email server
using webmail instead of Windows Mail, then delete the 6 messages
you keep receiving and the first message after them. Then try Windows
Mail again to see if it will now download later messages.

Norton is known as one of the three antivirus programs most likely to cause
problems in Windows Mail. It occasionally helps to tell it to disable email
scanning, if your version will let you do this, but it's more likely that
you
will have to uninstall it instead (not just disable it). Since its
uninstall program
often fails to remove the part of it that causes problems in Windows Mail,
you often then need to run this cleanup program:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You sometimes even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add it again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program
that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the McAfee antivirus
program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices;
they are the other two programs most likely to cause problems in Windows
Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install
where you tell it to leave out the part that scans email.

Problems in Windows Mail caused by antivirus programs are often slow
to show up, such as months.

Probably not; I don't have such a problem and have installed most of
the available updates except those for languages I can't read.

Re: Receive mail stopped working (Vista Windows Mail)

This translates that error number into an error type, but not one I
recognize.

http://www.nthelp.com/50/Outlook_error_codes.htm

We'll probably need the entire error message to offer much help, so right
click on it and copy all of it to your next message,

You may also need to log in to the email server using webmail instead
of Windows Mail, then delete the messages you have already received
and the first message after them.

Re: Receive mail stopped working (Vista Windows Mail)

Thanks:
I will check these out.
But symptom clarification.

1) There is no error meesage. Last night it just sat on recevieng mail for
several hours with no movement of the green progress bar at all. (I had left
it running all day as well)

2) The problem email turned out to be one with Access files attached.

3) Tried with Norton, after uninstalling Norton, after installing Kaspersky,
and after disabling Kaspersky (2009). No change to symptoms at all.

All other mails (before the Access attached one) arrived OK, but the Access
attached one just hung. No sign of disk activity, just a non progressing
progress bar.

Eventually used the providers web mail service to download the Access file,
deleted the mail in question, and carried on.

Could this be another example of Nanny Microsoft deciding that even though I
have chosen to receive Access files, Nanny still knows best?

Hmm------

OH, AND TIP FOR ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THEIR POSTS AGAIN:
Put your user name in the search box, and search under 'windows'.!!

Re: Receive mail stopped working (Vista Windows Mail)

Your experience is not at all uncommon, and it certainly isn't
limited to Microsoft email programs. For various reasons, a message
residing on the server can become corrupted in such a way that the
POP3 download of it stalls out.

The Norton uninstall program often fails to remove the parts of the Norton
antivirus program that cause problems in Windows Mail. You may now
need to run this cleanup program:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.
