| Newbie Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Windows Mail Problem I have had this problem for some time now and despite posting on a number of other forums have not had the problem solved yet or in most cases have not even had a reply, below is my problem as posted; I am having a problem with my Windows Mail. I have had to do a restore using the Packard Bell restore feature on the advice of my tech guy and have encountered a problem. Prior to the restore everything worked fine. The problem is in the send/receiving of mail. When I press the Send/Receive button the Windows Mail dialogue box (showing the error tab) comes up a tells me; “Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details” No errors are showing and at the bottom of the box it shows “0 of 3 tasks completed successfully”. At the bottom right hand corner of my screen it shows the number of the last messages received. I can still send messages if I go to; Tools, Send and Receive and Send. On starting up my PC and Windows Mail, mail is received and sent in the normal way but when I try Send/Receive any time after that the problem occurs. I have checked my ISP mailbox and there are no outstanding messages. I have checked all my setting against my laptop and they match, I have three e-mail addresses and am operating Windows Vista Premium, all updates are downloaded automatically. Any help would be appreciated. " I use Norton 360 and have un-installed and re-installed cleanly, I had no problem with Norton previously. I have also deleted my mail accounts and re-entered them. To date I have been using my laptop or ISP to check my mails. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. |

uninstalling it often fails to eliminate the problems it causes in Windows Mail, due to its rather poor uninstall program. You often need to run this cleanup program after the uninstall: <http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039> You may then need to remove your email account under Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again. If this doesn't cure your problem, wait a while and try to connect again, in case the mail servers are down. If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause such problems in Windows Mail. Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they are the other two of the three antivirus programs that cause the most problems in Windows Mail. I also removed my e-mail accounts and re-entered them as suggested but it made no difference to the problem. Prior to restoring my system I was using Norton and Mail without any problems. |

| Guest | Re: Windows Mail Problem Why did you reinstall Norton when it caused the problem with Windows Mail? Norton software is one of the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail. If you want Windows Mail to work reliably you will have to uninstall Norton, and follow that up with their debris removal tool. We can recommend a free antivirus that is compatible with Windows Mail. | Newbie Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: Windows Mail Problem Gary, I do not know that Norton has created the problem, from some of the few suggestions I have had, I deleted and re-installed cleanly hoping that it would clear the problem but it hasn’t. On re-installing Norton through the Norton site I managed to get an upgrade to Norton V2 from my original version so in effect have a new version of 360. I have not had a problem in the past with Norton and have used it for 7-8 years without any problems, clearly though from some people there does seem to be the odd glitch sometimes. When I deleted Norton, the first time, I tried to run my mail account again without any AV, cleared my email accounts and re-entered them but the problem was still there. I have contacted Norton now and have told them of the suggestions to ditch their programme which I'm sure they wouldn’t be happy about and await their reply. I haven’t used Windows Live Mail before, what effect if any will that have on e-mail settings, addresses etc? All suggestions gratefully accepted |

regardless of whether whatever they tell you to actually works for more than a short time.

Be sure to follow Robert's suggestion to follow up with the Norton cleanup program. If you like, we can recommend a compatible free antivirus. | Newbie Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: Windows Mail Problem Many thanks Guest and Gary for replies, Guest, I did a full un-install from add/remove programmes and then I used the cleanup tool to clear any dross followed by a clean new install. Gary, true I have'nt used Norton on Vista for 8 years but up to the point in question no great problems, I also have it installed on my laptop and all OK (so far). I know of the freebie AV's out there, Avast and AVG and I will more than likely go that route if all else fails. I will look into Windows Live Mail also but I feel before that I would like to know what is causing the problem. I could do all of the above and still have the problem. This problem was created by a Tech Guy trying to diagnose a hardware problem by phone, taking the easiest route,"do a restore and that should clear it", and then followed up by a tech visit. Initial hardware problem cleared but then I have to reinstall all my programmes all over. |

| Newbie Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: Windows Mail Problem I told Symantec what my problem was and after the usual advice of isolating each part of their programme, to no effect, they have advised me to contact Microsoft support. I have passed on to them the fact that many people are unhappy that their product caused problems in Vista and that they were unlikely to receive repeat business in the future. I finished with asking them to make sure that their customer services were informed but did not receive any comment from them. Their response times althought quite good resulted in e-mails being returned very early in the morning, no chance of an on-line chat then! Their call centre is overseas and I believe they do not have the expertise to diagnose or respond appropriately to a problem and they work from a script and not a technical manual. |
