    Disappearing Mail

Hi there, recently i have had a company swear black and blue that they
replied to my email by hitting reply so there was no reason why i wouldn't
have received their reply - check my junk mail. I don't have a junk main
box, just and inbox so it's a bit of a mystery. I thought the error must be
    theirs.

But .... today i have been working on my computer and twice have heard the
sound for incoming mail go but when i look at my inbox in Windows Mail,
    there's nothing new - weird????

The lady at the above company told me that she had heard of issues where
there is an automatic filter and that's how my mail might have been deleted
without me even having done anything.

Is this true, is there any way incoming mail gets deleted without fully
landing in the inbox? As i am a self employed photographer and work from
home and I depend on email enquiries for my business this is an important
issue for me, and if mail has been automatically deleted is there any way i
    can get it back??

All replies and especially solutions gratefully received.

    Kind regards
    Marie-Claire

    Re: Disappearing Mail

Yes, programs can be installed that will block incoming mail. I have a program provided by my ISP called SpamBlocker which tries to weed out SPAM. As I do not fully trust it, I have it set up so I can check all questionable mail where it is kept on the server to see whether I want to allow it to go through. And a number of antivirus programs also can be set up to block mail. For example, see this page on the University of Minnesota site which gives instructions for turning off the feature of various versions of Norton Antivirus if the student suspects mail is getting lost:

    Disable AV E-mail Auto-Protect | SSL | UMN-TC

However, if you are hearing the sound of incoming mail, I would suspect a Windows Mail problem of some sort. I'll have to research that (in case some other Vista Forums member doesn't come in before that with the needed info.)

You're not running Windows Mail if you just have an inbox.
Like most email programs nowadays, Windows Mail has a folder
for suspected spam emails. It is called Junk E-mail folder. Did you
look in there? Also, one somewhat dangerous setting will vaporize
junk emails instantly: Tools, Junk E-mail Options, the last option
is for "Permanently delete...". I don't recommend that setting for
anyone due to the possibility of false positives.

Some third party Internet Security suites and anti-spam programs
add their own junk email folder.
