What's the point of the junk mail folder?

I'm clearly missing something here, but could someone tell me what it's for?
I mean, you still have to check all the mail in it to make sure it's not
genuine.

The point is it should catch the real junk from going to your general inbox.

Presumably it saves time because you would only check your
Junk E-mail folder once a day or so. Once you inspect the Junk
emails you can mass delete the entire folder contents, which
also saves a little time.

Hmm, OK, I suppose there's something in that. Thanks.

Yeah, but haven't you noticed? Nothing in life is perfect.
Distinguishing spam from desired emails is more of an art
than a science.
