They want me to reformat my new laptop!!

They want me to reformat my new laptop!!

I have a new laptop with Vista.
I successfully set up Windows mail including having multiple email addresses
go from my webmail to it.
    The problem is:
When I am working on the internet and need to contact a web provider through
their web site email link or when I am in a site which says to 'clink here to
email this site to your friends'
I get an error message saying that
the operation could not be performed because the default mail client is not
    properly installed

I have spoken to my service provider and they check and all was ok
the same with Compaq and Microsoft (who want money to sort it out)

Now Compaq want me to restore my pc to its original settings ie reformat it.
I have set it up as a business computer and have been already using it for a
    month.
Have anyone else had this problem and WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Go to Default Programs, either on the start menu or in Control Panel, ensure
that WM & Internet Explorer have ALL their defaults set?

You will have more friends if you don't "clink here to email this site to
your friends". You have no idea how annoying that is, people who surf all
day and send you the most meretricious selection of sites, constantly. I
had to give my daughter a lecture about that. When that didn't work, I sent
MY site to all the people on her "CC:" list.

Do what Mac says, set your default programs in Control Panel or Start Menu.
The people who want you to restore the PC to its default configuration,
    don't listen to them.

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
    "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail" or "Windows Live Mail" (depending on which one you want to be
the default). If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Re: They want me to reformat my new laptop!!

    Hi
I am not in the habit of spamming my friends but instead I am involved in
business online and am part of a team of people successfully.
How ever when I have a problem on a site and need to contact teh producer it
is very frustrating to get an error message instead of being able to send the
message to resolve the problems on the site.
I believe that all my defaults have been set correctly and I dread the
thought of having to reset this computer as per the makers request by
    reformating
    I still need a solution.

Did you apply the Default Programs fix that was already given to you?
    In case you misplaced it:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
    "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
