What is difference between "Microsoft Outlook email" & "Windows Ma

In VISTA I have always accessed my email by clicking the icon labeled "Email
- Microsoft Outlook" but suddenly my PC has responded with a box "Cannot
start Microsoft Outlook."
But I seem to get to the identical place by clicking the icon "Windows Mail"
- i.e., I have the same Inbox, Folders & Address Book.
Is there a difference ?
What do I have to do to fix the problem with the icon that no longer works ?
