Can't send email - read the threads but nothing works

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'Main Mail', Server: 'smtp.central.cox.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

The above is the message I receive when trying to send mail of any kind.
This includes anything from a one word message with no attachments. This
just happened about two weeks ago after appx 7 months of use with my new
laptop and windows vista using "windows mail". I just spent the last 30
minutes typing this and I'm not even sure if this will post....

Here is what I have tried so far after reading the available threads:
    1) Turned off trend micro to email scanning; didn't work.
    2) Uninstalled trend micro from my computer; didn't work.
    3) Tried to reinstall IE-7; it told me I already had it so I couldn't
download again; I thought maybe if I overwrote the program I might put back
    in something that disappeared...
    4) 'Mail Server' is set to POP3
    5) 'Incoming' is pop.central.cox.net
    6) 'Outgoing' is smtp.central.cox.net
    7) 'Outgoing SMTP port' is 25
    8) 'Incoming POP3' is 110
    9) Oh, yeah, Downloaded 'Windows Live Mail'; same problem.

I know just enough techie stuff to screw something up and/or to sound like I
might know something (trust me it's a ruse), so if you can help me with my
problem, please speak in laymen's terms'.

My next step is to go the Best Buy store and give my computer with all my
personal and account data to the geek squad. This scares me!

    Please help,
    Chris

Run this McAfee removal tool now:
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...107083&lc=1033

Now Remove the account, close WM, rebuild the account.

Install either of the following FREE AV applications, but please do a custom
install, and omit the email scan.

    AVG free edition:
    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
    or
    Avast free edition:
    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Was either Norton or McAfee antivirus ever installed, perhaps as
a free trial version, when you first bought that computer?

Re: Can't send email - read the threads but nothing works

As far as I know, no Norton or MacAfee was ever installed. Best buy
installed trend micro and as noted in original posting, I have uninstalled
    it.
I also just ran the coffee removal tool as recommended by mac above. It
really messed something up and when I rebooted it froze. I did a cold shut
down and restarted and it went into a program that tried to load an earlier
saved version or something. It then said it couldn't fix the problem and
shut down. I restarted and everything seems to be working EXCEPT my windows
mail. Still have the same problem...

Re: Can't send email - read the threads but nothing works

Understand that Best Buy is not the manufacturer, and they have
no control over what programs are on a new computer fresh from
the factory. So, they may have done a sloppy job of uninstalling,
say, Norton antivirus, before they installed Trend Micro.
Since you already ran the McAfee removal tool, you might as well
run the Norton removal tool also:

That did not work either. They gave me a backup disk with my computer. If
I put it in the drive and start the computer, will it straighten things
    out???

When replying, please quote the message you are replying to,
    so there is some continuity.

I have no way of knowing what is on that 'backup' disk.

Before you do anything drastic, try a non-Microsoft email program:

Re: Can't send email - read the threads but nothing works

Ok, I've run the MacAfee and Norton removals as suggested; neither put
things right. I am still unable to send messages.

I don't know what is on the backup disc either; it is a set of three discs
that I am assuming will format the hard drive and put all the original
programs back in place. I agree this is the drastic move, however, if I can
get this working I can deal with reloading my other programs over the next
week or so. I've been unable to send mail for almost a month now...

As for trying an alternate email program I think I have a 'change-phobia'.
If I can restore my computer to original just-bought-it condition, then when
I load my trend micro virus program, I will ensure that I tell it not to
check my email... Would this perhaps keep this problem from happening in
the future? or is it a crap-shoot.

Re: Can't send email - read the threads but nothing works

Yes, restoring your computer to factory condition should fix the problem.
It just seems like it would be a lot more effort than trying a different
email program. After restoring, I recommend you try out Windows Mail
before and after reinstalling Trend Micro. Or don't reinstall Trend Micro
at all because we've seen quite a few reports here that even turning
off email scanning in Trend Micro doesn't end its bad effects on
    Windows Mail.
