Problems using in Japan

Hi

A friend has a laptop which was working perfectly in the UK. He is now
visiting Japan and took his laptop with him. In Japan, he can receive
emails OK but, on trying to send, gets the following error message:-

"An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'test', Account: 'coldcell', Server:
'smtp.talktalk.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554
smtp.talktalk.net', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error
Number: 0x800CCC6F"

I suggested he write to this Newsgroup but on trying to connect to the
Microsoft news server gets a 'unable to access' message. SO, I'm writing on
his behalf! Any ideas please?

Cheers,
John (IDontBelieveIt)

Re: Problems using in Japan

Doesn't look like a typical port 25 block:

So we have to look elsewhere.

'Unknown error' is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off your antivirus email scanning function does not resolve
your problem, consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it
is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus
programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Re: Problems using in Japan

Hi Gary

Many thanks for your very helpful (as usual!) reply....

AVG free is being used with email scanning turned off.

I've just been in touch with my pal (using Skype) and he says he has now
started up a Google email account which seems to be working OK. I'll send
him a copy of this posting.

Thanks again

Cheers,
John (IDontBelieveIt)

Are they attempting to connect to a UK ISP, TalkTalk when trying to send,
'smtp.talktalk.net'?

If so they need to contact the ISP or connection provider, that they are now
using, and enter that servers SMTP server name at tools>accounts>select
account>properties>server tab.

Re: Problems using in Japan

Chances are, AVG antivirus was installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.
