Mail Store Compacting Stops Running Midway

When I close mail I'm asked if I want to compact. Select yes and it
begins, then about midway it stops with a message that tells me the
program has stopped and do I want to restart it?

I found it apparently is DEP and it suggests I contact the vendor
for an updated version. I am running Vista Home Premium with SP1
Here's the info on the message:

What can I do to correct & compact the data store?

Re: Mail Store Compacting Stops Running Midway

Try compacting with my Windows Mail utility: www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/

Thank you. I've done that, cleaned and compacted. I hope it did something,
but it's hard to tell, as it hasn't satisfied Windows Mail. It still wants
me to compact every time I close the program, with the same end result.

A sign of insanity?
Taking the same action and expecting a different result

Yep. I was hoping WinMail would not find the need to compact once your
offering compacted it, but when I close mail, the message still comes up. I
then click yes and it fails, just as it had before. I just ran both through
again to make sure. Same result.

When it occurs, it gives me 2 choices and I always check search for a
solution and restart Mail. A flag simply comes up telling me it is DEP
shutting it down.

Before you ask, I've had BitDefender (2008, now 2009) and Windows Defender
on this machine from the 1st minute of construction. And they've caught a
few nasty boogers along the way

Everything else seems to be running super duper on this machine.

Re: Mail Store Compacting Stops Running Midway

I would disable all other running software and then try it.

If it still is problematic, you can change the Compact Check count value
under this key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail) in the
registry to zero to reset the key. You can also adjust when to compact
under Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance and change the compact number
to something very high, so it won't bug you. There is much less need to
compact frequently in WinMail due to the fact that the messages are no
longer part of the database.
